Just heard on the ABC news here in Brisvegas that the Cherry Venture wreck - icon and one of the major attractions at Teewah Beach is being demolished. Also heard that they are introducing a 1Km 'exclusion zone' around the wreck and that there is a $600 fine for breaching it in any way.

If this is so - then how are we supposed to pass by the wreck to get to Double Island Point (from the South) or the Tewantin Ferry (from the North). Are they expecting everyone to use alternate routes like Freshwater track? Don't see how it could handle all that traffic. Are they building some kinda alternate route around the wreck (can't imagine them doing this in the National Park!).

Does anyone have the full story on this?

For those who are not familiar with Cherry Venture - she has been slowly rusting away on Teewah beach the Cooloola (mainland) section of Great Sandy NP in Queesnland since being grounded there in a cyclone back in the 50's. In the last couple of years the wreck has become quite dangerous - hence the reason for demolishing her. Would be nice to see them clean her up - rather than chop her up and leave her on the beach.

Prado Boy "grounded there in a cyclone back in the 50's"

The Cherry Venture was driven ashore in July 1973 by 'Cyclone David'.

Apologies William - I believe that was a typo. You are quite correct. The photos of it in the pub near the ferry are well worth a look.

Prado, stop stressing mate. What you heard was correct, but only when they were demolishing the top superstructure of the wreck, it was getting pretty dangerous. What is in place now is a 20 meter exclusion zone around the wreck and a $6000 fine if anyone breaches the exclusion zone. That way people can still see whats let of the ship, but not endangering themselves by giong in to it. The Cherry Venture went a ground in 1974. I remember it well as I was there when they were trying to salvage her, she was a big girl then, not much left now.
