Good Morning All

I have a 2006 D4D Hilux which is starting to experience clutch problems. At this point it is noticable on hill starts when either moving forward or in reverse which I noticed this morning. It gives a little shudder. I have found this vehicle wanting on hill starts since day one (not steep ones) when towing) (camper trailer 950kg) Has anyone experienced this problem with their late model Hilux?

Check out www.newhilux.net for plenty of info on the new model lux. There have been a few threads on clutch problems.

G'day Morto1,

Bad shudder when I first took delivery in mid 2005 and the dealer convinced me to see if it would 'wear-in', which it did after 5K or so.

Slipping on hill starts when towing is a real problem and I have had to resort to black-top low-range on occasions. As long as you can steer directly ahead and avoid diff wind-up, it is fine.

Of course that is not always possible and a smoking clutch, stinking the car out and a renewed shudder for a period is the result. I expect to replace the clutch, which will fail the day after the warranty runs out and hope an improved after-market unit will be available.

Phew, I feel a lot better with that off my chest.

In all other respects, the vehicle does everything I ask of it.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul

Toyota have said they will replace but like you I would like an aftermarket alternative. I was warned prior to buying that they had clutch problems and I did not listen. I still have not learned after all these years, my brother in law who warned me not to marry the handbrake.

Bit of a known issue, there has been alot said on the Hilux forum mentioned above.

The series 2 Hilux that came out in Aug 2006 had a stronger clucth pack.

Best thing to do is take it to a Toyota dealer and give it hell before going to get it hot....then they will replace it.

Ours is even more notiacble with the chip fitted.

Toyota replaced my clutch at 40000km after the the throw out bearing started to make a bit of noise. I had been complaining about it slipping since 10000km service. Mine is an October 05 build date. Done 53000km with no problems since.

Hi Scott

Interestingly enough I cracked the magic 40,000 a few weeks ago when this all started.

Thanks Scott
