Notice how it is always the smart r'ses that don't think too much who always come up with the first reply to a genuine question. For the price of a Nissan you can afford to put a couple of motors in before you have spent what a Toyota costs and you still have a better vehicle.

Chill out mate!!! Didn't relise you were so busy with the GENUINE replies. :P

If ya can't take a little TIC humor, may I suggest you ask this question to a auto shop and not a PUBLIC forum.

Hava a nice day

Rossco,
I use Royal Purple 10w-40, full synthetic, I wrote to Nissan about three years ago to clear it with them, I got quite a political answer email that gave them an escape route, but after a brief (non committed) phone call to the technical section I was happy enough with the response. I've got 163k on the clock and alls well so far. More than happy. It's not cheap, check out the web site for more info www.royalpurple.com.au
We use the same product on high speed gearboxes at work reliability went from months to years, high speed I'm talking 36,000 rpm so it's gettin up there. The Nissan ZD30 recommended oil is either a semi or full synthetic, can't recall right now.
Keep the shiny side up

Hows it going Rossco,

Have been using the Nissan semi-synth stuff since I realised the delicate nature of this engine !

A little extra insurance and you dont need a mortgage to afford it.

Didnt realise that Stefan was a 3.0 hater , probably got some upset family members though !

Glenn.

G'day Glenn

Don't hate them at all, would never own one myself but thats just me. When I bought my 2.8, I could have got a 3.0 for around the same price. But after some reserch I decided on the 2.8. Not enough power sometimes and some have had head issues with them. I picked the 2.8 cause its a six cylinder motor and can be powered up to 3.0's power with little mods.

You should know my old man has the 3.0 and its been a great car.

Cheers Stefan

I used Castrol RX super every 5000k's for the 105,000k's that I had the ZD30 in the Patrol. Never an issue and it did some hard work under all conditions..

Rossco,
I’ve been using Mobil1 5W50 for quite a while and have recently switched to Mobil Delvac1 in 5W40. I find the engine is much quieter with the thinner oil. My oil is still clear after 10K.
A few members of the Patrol Forum are happily using Dellow 400 but the general consensus is that fully synthetic is best.
I’ve seen too many ZD30’s pop that were running “Genuine” Nissan oil to go near it, even after 5K service intervals.

Glenn.

Glenn,
Yes I do. Most synthetic oil manufacturers, including Mobil say that you can triple your oil change intervals with synthetic oil, but I would prefer to stick with Nissans recommendation in this case. Knowing that you’re using a good oil and changing it more often than needed is good insurance, just like those that use the standard stuff and do it every 5K.

I'm not a fan of the nissan oil. It's supposed to be a semi synthetic 10-30w. I first used it winter '06 becasue I thought being in an alpine area I'll be nice to my motor. It was a nice blue color. I change my oil every 5k and I don't remember any difference in engine noise or performance when I changed back to my regular oil - Caltex Delo 400.
This past winter I did an oil change prior to winter and the first thing I noticed was the oil's color. It was brown and not blue. the engine was very noisey. Just changed back to Delo 400 for Summer and the engine is so much quieter and feels like it's performs better. So I have decided to stick with Delo 400 in winter also.
You just don't know what you are getting in those packets of 'Nissan' oil and Delo $400 is the same price.

With that level of insecurity may I suggest trading the 3.0 Patrol for a Landrover???? They seem to suffer similar image issues

Night Night peoples :) :) :)

Hey Leroy

Do you use the Delo 400LE or 400 muligrade?

I've got a TD100 cruiser and just started using the delo 400 multigrade @ 5000k intervals this week...

Which one do you use and why...I believe they are both 15W-40 but a very highly rated oil with good long term capabilities???

Cheers

Andrew

I use the the Multigrade and change my oil every 5k also. I don't use it for any particular technical reason apart from specs and the rep. for being a good quality engine oil. I do remember someone saying it's better to have an oil with a higher sulphated ash level but I can't remember the reason off the top.

Rosco

If you do a search to find the Nissan Patrol forum this topic has been covered in depth. I use Penrite HPR Diesel 15W-50, this is a semi-synthetic. In colder climates (I live in the more aird areas of this great land) I would use a 10W-40 or maybe even 5W-40. You should use at least a semi-synthetic or fully synthetic preferably. With these engines you really do not want to scrimp on your oil, make a point of buying top of the line oils.

Regards

Snowy

The Nissan semi-synthetic oil is 10-W-40 ACEA: B3.
Available in 5ltr or 20 ltr containers. There was a Nissan service bulletin doing the rounds a while ago that says to use this oil in the ZD30 motor. If you do a search you may be able to find it.

So what oil is mr nissan using? Like I mentioned above I have tried it twice and got 2 different oils. Even when my BIL bought the same oil he got his 2 containers home and one had the blue oil and the other the brown oil. I don't trust the stuff!

I had the same issues Leroy, oil was blue/green, next time I bought it it was brown. I asked at the spares dept and they said it was a different supplier. Do I trust the stuff? I suppose I have to. I can only go by the specs that are on the container. Both the blue and brown oil are the same spec.(So the containers say)

Personally I use Mobil Synth 'S' 10W-40 which is a semi-synthetic oil with an API rating of CF. Nissan say fully synthetic oil is not be used under any circumstances nor is any oil that exceeds a CF rating. This is confirmed in your owners manual and in Nissan Technical Service Bulletin MA-04-001 of 30 SEpt 2004 for all Y61 & D22 vehicles fitted with ZD30 engines.
