Hows it going guys , hope you can help.

After a recent mud filled trip to the Watagans and a bit of pressure wash action , I noticed a grinding type noise with the engine idleing , it almost went away with the air con turned on.

Today I had a crack at fixing it by spraying brake cleaner into the front of the clutch, then soaked it with Lanotec. This didnt fix the problem.

Has anyone had the front off their a/c compressor and is there a bearing to replace ? is this a quick job . Any tips will be appreciated.

Glenn.

This hasn't happened to me yet on my 3.0l patrol but it did on my Rodeo. From memory the dealer changed the compressor under warranty. That was also the case for a couple of mates also with thier patrols. I'd have a chat to an aircon specialist.

Glenn

I owned a 2002 Series III 3.0tdi Patrol up until early this year and experienced the same problem (I think) after a day of mud bathing fun...I tried to fix the 'squeaky grinding noise' with the usual methods with some effect short term but it returned a short time later. Found out this was a common problem and even my dealer couldn't fix it without replacing the belt!!!

Alternatively, and the cheaper option, was to leave it and after some weeks it eventually went away. Something to do with dirt getting into the belt and something else that I can't remember.

Anyway, I know others have had the same problem as I've described, it may be what your experiencing too. Of course it could be the bearing as you mention but I haven't heard of that being an issue.

Thanks for the reply Andrew,

I have already sorted the ideler pulley and belt squeeling drama, although I am looking at the ideler pulley next, cause its still alittle grindy with the a/c turned on.

I have had my head near the a/c compressor and know its the problem though.

It's all good fun playing in the mud and becasue the compressor is mounted down low one of the consequences is getting mud in the pully/clutch of the compressor. I try to stay away from bog holes these days as much fun as they are!

G'day again Glenn,

Mine does the same thing after some fun in the mud, usually lasts about a couple of weeks, this time I sprayed some lithium grease around the pulley and it gave instant results.

Bloody annoying though hey.

Cheers Stefan

I am definitely going to have to strip it , Lanotec did nothing.

Sounds like a bearing dieing.

After becoming very bogged in a rather deep mud puddle I had a number of problems with bearings and pulleys. Do you really want to have a potentially dodgy air-conditioner coming in to summer?
I had the inner bearing replaced on mine, cost about $250 and half a days at a workshop. The bearing is pretty cheap about $30 from memory, but they require a specialist tool for those compressors, they didn't have to regass it either.

Cheers Snowy.

Hi,

Yep had the pulley bearing on the A/C fail on me twice while I had the 3.0 in the Patrol.
It's pretty easy to get the pulley off - just need a puller & circlip pliers.
1st time the pulley & bearing assembly were replaced with one from a Commodore. Belt was a bit tight though.
Next time I got a similar bearing to the original & pressed it into the original pulley.
Whatever you do, don't let it go 'cos it will give you grief.

If you really want to track the problem down, get a metre or so of plastic hose (or garden hose) and put it to your ear. Move the other end around where you think the noise is coming from. Works like a stethoscope, and it is directional.

Not overly common but we do a few for the Nissan dealers under warranty, it seems that is the vehicle is driven in muddy conditions the bearing goes noisey but OK in dust.

Can't tell you if the bearing is a removable type.

Position of the compressor just funnels liquid in. Too bad warranty is long gone!
