Hi Ray
1st and 2nd gear have a wine , 3rd , 4th, and 5th are ok

When driving in 1st , 2nd and third , low revs the gear box has a loose groaning sound , not bearing type noise though.

so far this gear box has cost me $4000.00 the car has done 120 ,000 kms sinse 1992.

Ihave had the oil leaking into the transfer case problem as well .

What do you think Ray

The noise could be from the clutch. I put in a Safari performance clutch that is claimed to have vibration damping qualities and it made that groaning noise noticeably lower.

Overall it sounds like like you have been given the runaround

Hi Ray

Yes that is a good place to start , i had the cluch replaced 3 years ago and they used an aftermarket one , and it does chatter a bit .

That is a good place to start i'll work from the front back , i was going to relace it with a new genuine cluch , however i will check out the safari cluch as well.

Thanks for your help Ray.

Hi Colinvic1,
I would recommend Matt at Total Traction Drivelines. He sorted out my 80 series really well. Kept breaking diffs, and none since he fixed it.
Really knowledgable bloke and very friendly and easy going. Will take the time to listen to your problem.
Cant say he is cheap, but quality work doesnt come cheap, and it will probably be the last time you need to get it fixed.
Not related and not business partner, just happy customer. And I could tell you of at least 2 or 3 other happy customers I know.

He is in Moorabin 03 9555 1501

Hope it helps,
Cheers,
Shaggy

g,day coln , i too have a similar age troopy that had the oil draining into the transfere case , the reason for this is the drive gear from the box to drive the transfere case wears the internal spline , and as a result gearbox oil drains down the spline into the t/case and eventually spits out the breather of the t/case as it is overfull.the worn drive gear or maybe just low gearbox oil level may be giveing you the noise, there is an after market extended drive gear available which runs on the unworn part of the spline, this modification is only suitable if you do not run a pto winch as you will need to remove drive gear ,spacers etc , all bits are available at don kyatts hope this helps dave

G'day Dave

Wouldn't you know it , i just happen to have a PTO winch on my car , so i guess thats out , , and since the car has been back this time i have changed the gear oil to a synthetic oil and have cept a close eye on it , i even dream about it . Thats interesting about the gears internal spline , sounds like that sort of a noise .
and also the cluch could be a contributor as well.
Thanks for your advice Dave .

Ill let you know what happens next , i won't be going to the same guy again

Hi Colin
Three things come to my mind.
1; Bent or distorted clutch plate
2; Miss alignment between gearbox and bell housing.
3; Lay shaft and or lay shaft bearings damaged or worn, the lay shaft is spinning the fastest in low and second gears

Hi Ray

I have just had someone else drive my car , and they said almost the same thing as you , word for word.

Sounds like we could be on the right track , i will let you know the outcome .
