Heading down to the fabled HC after Christmas. We've found a couple of possible
places that offer horse riding, but thought that someone on here may have some first hand experience to impart. So if you've done a bit of horse riding in that area (with a commercial provider) I'd be interested to hear your opinions on who provides a good service. We (me, wife and 2 teenagers) are novices and only looking for a ride of up to half a day. So unfortunately there can be no real man from
Snowy River stuff for us.
Never been to the HC and really looking forward to it - 4 wheeling,
bush camping, sightseeing, horse riding, etc.
Thanks from the Moose

Unfortunately spiralling insurance premiums have closed down quite a few of the trail riding companies, nevertheless you will love every minute of your High Country experience.

Hi Moose, where are you actually going too? I have done lots of riding in various parts of the HC but all with my own horses. However I do know of the commercial operators in some
places (those that still run as Shaker as said) so if your heading to the southern parts of the HC towards Gippsland I might be able to offer some advice.
Cheers Darryn

G'day Darryn
Well we don't have any specific route planned but we are aiming to see as much as we can in the time we have (a bit over 2 weeks). It will be a bit of a suck it and see depending on weather, track closures etc. We are
well armed with maps, etc. So if you have any suggestions re horse riding I'd be much appreciative (and so would my teenage daughter who is the main instigator of the riding part of the trip).
Cheers from the Moose

Hi again Moose. A quick look at Yellow Pages has High Plains Droving (03 51456 055) who could probably do a ride around
Dargo. This is run by the Treasures who have been doing it for years and are reasonable from what I've heard. Coonawarra Trail Rides (03 5157 6395) are at Iguana
Creek on the
Dargo Rd approx 30 minutes north of the Princes Hwy. They have been doing rides for years as
well and are very good. They also run a school
camp which is to all in holidays. That's all in my local area that I know first hand.
If your heading
Omeo way you could try Packer's at Anglers Rest (03 5159 7241), or
Mansfield area McCormack's (03 5775 2886) or
Watson's (03 5777 3552). Lovick's and Stoney's have shut down due to insurance and other problems, as have some near me.
Cheers

Thanks for that Darryn
Your effort is much appreciated.
3 of those we'd located a website for last night, but you've expanded the list significantly.
A Merry Christmas and safe festive season to you and I hope that 2008 is a good year for you.

Try
Bogong Horseback Adventures.
www.bogonghorse.com.au
An operator for about 20 years, and a fine bushman be it High Country or deserts.
No commercial affiliation etc, etc.
Cheers
