One other thing that has always puzzled me... In the event of a major accident, is the mix of a high voltage DC battery and petrol in the same vicinity such a good idea??? Let alone that same high voltage and possible contact between terminals to rescue personnel or passengers (damaged battery and puddle of water on one side, and live wire via wet glove on the other). Far more deadly being DC rather than AC, DC will cause a static contraction of muscles whereas AC has "release time" through the zero voltage crossing.

mix of a high voltage DC battery and petrol in the same vicinity such a good idea- Prabaly not too good a mix, however they are fairly well sealed away.

Let alone that same high voltage and possible contact between terminals to rescue personnel- extensive R&D has gone into manufacturing these vehicles, along with proactive training resources for emergency workers, we had info from toyota regarding the prius pass over our work desk before it had even been released in australia- some very simple yet effective isolation methods, including the specific colour codeing of all high current cabling

This has been mentioned before but if you do a search on cradle to the grave on google you can find a list of all the (mainly US) vehicles and their total cost to the environment over the projected lifetime.
It makes a mockery of the proposed 'slug' to owners of older and less fuel efficient vehicles. The cruiser or patrol are nowhere near the environmental disaster that they would have us believe.

As said in the article a search on 'dust to dust' will bring up the link to the CNW research article on total costs.

Try Googling "hummer prius" . This is the stuff of urban myths, and the fallacy factory is working overtime! Some interesting matters are being aired and a lot of truths, half truths and untruths.

Would you buy a new car if you knew you had to buy a new engine for it in 3 years.

That's how long the traction battery in the Prius may last - and it'll cost you Six thousand dollars to replace !

Sure, the Prius can save you lots on petrol in city driving, but if you drive on the higway or freeway it can't be more efficient than an equivalent size petrol car - the electrics only hold enough charge for a few kms.

Hyunai i30 diesel car is more fuel efficient than the prius. It's hilarious and true. And it costs half the price.

And if you put the aircon on high (to stop you stewing will waiting at the lights etc, .. on any setting other then high the aircon shuts off when the car comes to a stop, not very good on a hot day in Brisvegas) the petrol motor runs all the time...

I disagree about saving petrol when driving in the city. Every time you accelerate the petrol engine kicks in....
If you drive at the normal 60K speed limit the petrol motor runs all the time...
About the only time it turns off is when coasting to a stop at the lights.. and then, see above re aircon...

What a con.
