Hi all, Getting all sorts of stuff together for fitting to my new 70 (If it ever gets here).
What is the best tubing to use for extending the diff breathers ? what sort of filters?
Does anyone think you need to fit breathers on gearboxes ?

Cheers to all.............BIGDOG

On our Hilux I used 5/16 general purpose rubber hose, very flexabl;e, strong and cheap.

Both my Jackaroo and our current LC 100 have transmission breathers - your vehicle probably will have too. I used either reinforced plastic tubing or rubber (the business end should be rubbery though I think, for suspension flexing etc - the front diff and the transmission are joined up via a T piece and terminated in a lawn mower filter (or any home made foam filter), at the top of the firewall. The rear breather went right up to the top of the last pillar, un-filtered. Whatever - that's mine - worked well on the Jackaroo - the LC hasn't been wet yet.

No lovely oily smells from it on hot days up there in the rear pillar?

I've used fuel hose (tough, flexible, no degredation from oil mist) and cheap fuel filters on the far end for the breathers on my Prado.

Plan on using the same on my 70 series when I get it (January delivery).

I post this link, ready to be bombarded with all the reasons why you shouldnt buy this.

Such as 'too expensive' or 'you can make the same thing using a piece of chewing gum and a recycled this or that for ONLY 2c' etc etc

But here goes anyway :-)

hi KiwiAngler
My breather tube from the gearbox and transfer case go all the way to the engine bay along with the front diff and end with a 180 deg bend downwards and have no filter on the end the rear dif has a breather which goes all the way up top of the wheel arch and with no filter just a 180 deg ben pointing down

I have a similar set-up to that shown in the photos, but it didn't cost ANYWHERE NEAR $100- !!!!

Just some plastic tubing and push-on fittings from Pirtek etc and a couple of filters. The push-on fittings are about $6- each and the tubing is about $3- per meter. There are options for the filters; don't know about those sexy, bleep -shaped ones, but a small fuel filter etc would suffice.

I'm making up a similar setup from bits left over from jobs we've done. The little filters are actually pneumatic exhaust silencers. You can get the stuff from places like SMC, Festo, or any other Pneumatics company (or me). As for the $100 buckeroos, if you buy the fittings and hose at a retail price it will probably cost you $75 - or more unless you're in the industry.

I actually had a set-up on my last Patrol which was similar to the $92- set-up. When I sold it I removed the rear breather and re-installed the OE set-up.

I have since fitted a new rear breather to the Dual Cab Chevvy from Hell, and had (up until today) just termineted the Festo hose in the cargo box with a female 1/8" BSP fitting......Thanks to this post I remembered that I had the little blue d-i-l-d-o filter/knobby thing and it screwed straight on today (once I found the damn thing.

I also found the other rubber hose etc when I found the little blue filter, so I decided to do the front diff today too. Only trouble is, I now don't have a blue filter gizmo......

Hey Louie the Fly....., do you stock these blue filters? If so, how much and could I get 2 off you please? (the one I already have probably needs changing anyway as it was on my last Patrol for about 5 years).....

Cheers

Roachie

Roachie, we don't stock them as such but I can get them for you. We buy in to order as the range of pneumatics parts is so huge. They only cost a few bucks each from memory but I will need to check. We generally buy SMC Pneumatics as they have a big range and they are reasonably priced compared to the others. From memory they even have a style made from brass that you can rinse out.

I need to order some gear after new year anyway. I'm on holidays until 7th Jan so I will do it when I get back if thats OK. Once I get the info I will send you a message.

How does my previous post appear twice???

BIGDOG,

I bought a diff breather kit off Ebay for about $25 which was probably about $10 of parts as I was too lazy to source them myself. I installed it without any problems and it has worked well.
