Here's a mystery for the solving. There used to be a jar under the gum tree at the Curran Curran water hole half way out to Hanging Rock in the Rudall River National Park. It was under the shady gum at the mouth of the gorge where most people would park. It was there last year (2006) but gone this year. It was very disappointing as I spent a couple of hours in 2006 reading 4 or 5 years worth of notes and there was some great info in there about tracks, places and GPS co-ordinates in the surrounding area. Did I miss it? Has it been moved or removed? I know a fire went through there in the preceding 12 months but the tree and immediate surrounds missed being burnt. Maybe some of this years travellers might have an answer to the mystery.

Cheers. Mick

Judging by the flood of replies - not a lot of people get there. Certainly not there in July 2007

It'd be good to get a feel from any other members or visitors as to how many get out there.

Water was about 6ft deep and green film over most of it. Lots of birds.

Cheers
Chris

cant shed any light on the cannister but in answer to how many people get out there......I think not a lot get off the main track running through the park.

we first started visiting the area in the early '90's and it felt like we were a little adventurous with virtually no one there............in fact on that trip we had over 100mm of rain fall ....yes it was forecast about 24 hours earlier but we were already in there and well off the track.....if we had "cut and run" we may well have been stranded on the way out and in a less suitable spot and so we decided it was more prudent to make a safe camp where we were ....so we bunkered down and got ready for it......

clouds buit up in a hurry.......the Rudall was in flash flood......"Jarra" Pool" and below ran a huge banker and needless to say we were remained stranded for a bloody long time.....the emergency tin tucker was getting low and BBQ dingo was looking likely for a while....also felt very priviliged to see it all happen.....

been back several times (last was 2004) and a little bleep tered to see the track damage, the litter and the increased number of people....

all are entitled to do so of course..but I wish if they came to see and experience a prisitine wilderness they would leave it like it..........we cart out more rubbish left behiind by others from some of these places than we make of our own !

as for curran curran and further on to hanging rock...and beyond far less traffic I believe.....

see you out there

Nice word picture Bungarra. Would have liked to be there. Very hard to just stay put.

Rubbish. The camp area at Desert Queen is all the evidence you need of those lazy/ignorant types who still think it's OK to burn bottles, leave cans, bottles, glass, dunny paper etc

They seem willing and able to carry it in full - but unable to carry it out empty. Poor toilet training/parenting many years ago? Or is it that no one's looking.

Cheers
Chris

G'dday Chris.............last year we were unfortunate to be "invaded" by a group late in the afternoon in a small campsite .....they really didnt have much choice at that stage but to cram in on us because they had left it too late as far as daylight was concerned and I knew there was nothing for hours away

they were noisy....inconsiderate and to this day I dont know why they were out bush............they left early a few hours before us and as we were leaving we found their rubbish........and disposable nappies.............

I gathered it all up.....yes nappies too...and spent the next couple of days praying we would come across them .....you can use your imagination as to what was going to happen when I found them....sh**t splatters ..

I think my wife spent the next couple of days praying for their sake that we didnt come across them........

we didnt......damn!

Got to admit the place has me hooked. Got my first brief look in July, 06. Jarra pool was packed with those seeking a respite from the Canning so we camped a few km downstream. Had to push thru a heap of scrub on the track out to Hanging Rock, particularly in that little stretch between the two sandy crossings only a km or two short of H/R. What a difference a year makes, in June this year, not a sole about, Jarra in pristine condition. A fire had gone thru the country west of Jarra so last years scrub were dried dead sticks. Had to watch the tyres tho. West of Hanging rock was a treat and much like you've described your early 90's experience. A lot of guess work in following the track. I'll be back again in 08 for an extended look around.

Cheers. Mick.

G'day Mick

We have been very fortunate over the years and had Jarra Pool to ourselves a couple of times for extended stretches.......in fact that was where I put theory into practice some years ago having to battery weld both main leaf springs back together......

Standing at Desert Queens "parking area" and looking towards the cave over the valley there is a very attractive flatish valley off to the right....it is my intention to head down there (SE) to cut across the Rudall River to the SE or maybe come back from the other way

have you done that at all?...or has anyone reading this done that area?.........

No haven't ventured further to the east from DQB. I didn't notice much in the way of tracks. Will send you a member message about it. Cheers. Mick.
