Evening all,
I have a Kamar bar on my Patrol which was on it when I bought it.
But it is the standard bar with out the bits at the end to put wheel carriers on it.
Has anybody here modified a stardard bar before? I think it would be possible for a metal fabricator to drill holes and weld some pipe in??
Other wise I am just lugging the heavy steel bar around for nothing.
Kamar were no help, they only wanted to sell me a new bar.
Cheers Stefan

stefan,
It is not exactly an experiment. I think that they call it R&D, and you know how much that cost.

Andrew,
Not doing me out of business yet. :-))
I made the modification to the rear bar that I had on the 80Series. Converted a single to a dual wheel carrier.
With the Troopie I made the rear bar and dual wheel carrier. I am thinking about doing this a side line and Stefan's vehicle would be good to experiment on. It is a Nissan after all and I could not make it any worse off. :-))

There is a caravan supply /
camping store near me and they have a wide range of stub axels.
I am lead to believe the Kamar ones use HQ Holden ones? but if you are going down this road you woud probably be wanting to build your own swing arms , just got a quote for OL ones at $700 each ( I only know this cause I have just been out bid on an OL rear bar on eBay , was $460 all week and I got outbid by $10 in the last 5sec , damn Austion Sniper! bar new is $1700 )
Like they said gat stub axels welded in and you are good to go.
Glenn.

Getting stub axles is the easy part, sourcing the hub to weld the arm to is very hard. You can't use a trailer hub as they are too big and are cast which makes them hard to weld to.
I managed to buy one and then had a machinist make me up some more. From memory I had to get ten made to get the cost down to something reasonable.
Basically you need a 75mm diameter piece of mild steel with the centre machined the same as a trailer hub to take the bearings, seal and cap.

Still alot less than $700 each , then you just weld up your own arms !

Glenn,
I have had weld splatter go down the inside of my boots and that really hurts.
Welding you own arms would have to bring a tear to your eye. :-))
