Hi all,
Have just test driven a cruiser 100 (1999) which I am considering buying. There is a slight but very audible "crunch" when changing up or down into third gear. When changing down from 4th the noise can be avoided by doing an old fashioned double declutch, which should not be necessary. Have heard a rumour of the lighter Hilux box having been used (desastrously) for a short time in cruisers. Does anyone know about this and whether it applies to this model?
Many thanks, Ian

Hi Ianwa
If it has the R150F gearbox beware. Listen for whine on overrun in all gears. If you can get the opportunity, drain the oil and look for evidence of metal.

I think you'll find that all the 100series with the 1Hz diesel had the lighter box. Petrols did not.
If you like the rest of the vehicle, just factor a $3000 repair bill into the cost of the vehicle. Then if you buy it, change the gear oil and see if the crunch goes away.

Ian,
My mate had the same model with the 1hz motor and the same thing with the 3rd gear of which ended up blowing. Cost him from memory $3500 to fix. Goes good now though.

Hey Ianwa
The problem here is that who ever serviced it has put thicker oil and not the synthetic oil in it, once this crunching happens it wont stop until it stops.
The thicker oil won't get between the syncro's this is my understanding.
Cheers Steve.

Hi Ianwa
Goona is about right on the mark for overhaul/replacement -
mine went at 160k, cost me $3,450. Was told by gearbox specialist, that from his experience, 150 - 180k's is when these, lighter boxes, give it up.
Good luck
TD
