1HD-T Gasser tranny?

Hi folks, just bought a engine that came from japan to install into a 1997 80 series landcruiser.

I may have problems with two items, torque converter and transmission. Recently I read somewhere that the gassers have the ECU on the engine which controls the transmission.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, looks like I will have to source out the tranny and torque converter. If you could lead me to a used unit I would also be very greatful.

Unfortunately I have no info on your post, however I also have an 80 series 1HZ and would really love to put a 1HD-T in it. How much did yours cost and who did you buy it off?

We payed 6000 Canadian for the engine and we bought if off a couple guys importing them in thier spare tie.

Please tell us what motor you are replacing and what tranny is in there at the moment. If it is 4.5 to be replaced by 1hdt and you have auto A442 tranny (94 and earlier) then you will need the control box aswell as torque converter and flex plate.
The other option is to make it 5 speed. 95 on had a different box again, and the control for it was in the motor ecu.

It was the 4.5 and the ECU is on the motor, could it be removed and position on the diesel? I was told the diesels have only two sensors, one on the throttle and the other is a temp sensor.

The ecu for the tranny is either above where the manual pedal would be on earlier models, or (and this is what you probably have been told) in the motor ecu above the glovebox. I believe it was 95 that the second occurred, and i also know that there are two types of auto in the states, the a442 that is in all oz cruiser autos, and another which is in the oz prado was put in the later 80 series. Log onto www.lcool.org and ask the 80 series list:-)

I know two guys who have put these motors in their standards instead of a bolt on turbo, and never looked back. Everything bolts straight in.

ps 7.5k for motor and box, with your 1hz and box being worrth 3k secondhand atleast.

Thanks for the response, we live in good old Canada and the engine was imported from Japan. The engine being replaced is the 4.2 and you say the ECU is on the engine, any way to make it work on the gasser?

We need to know what year model your cruiser is. If it is a 4.2 petrol 3f motor, then things are all different to the 4.5 twincam motor.
Your auto will need a new ecu that is meant for a diesel as the diesel changes different revs to the petrol, i would be asking your local toyota guy for comparisons between part numbers of diesel and petrol torque converters, aswell as flex plates and starters (sis you know jap diesels run 24 volt starters? 12v glow/alt/etc Then there is the differ3ent tanks without pumps in them for the diesel....you are planning an involved transplant...i would be looking for a complete motor/box from Japan.

Yes it is a 4.5 gasser with auto transmission.

As for the 24 volt system, this engine is a 24 volt start and then a 12 volt run. Alternator is 12 volt which we have figured out.

I haven't checked the part number, but it sounds like the TPS or
Throttle Position Sensor. It usually provides feedback to the auto
tranny computer as to what the driver is doing with his foot. With
the earlier A442F's I *think* it would be controlling the OD and
torque converter clutch. Perhaps your truck doesn't have any tranny
electronics?

Is the connector green? It sounds like the temp sensor for the
glowplug ECU? Perhaps you don't have a glowplug ECU (considering the
truck started life as a petrol). Do you have a manual glowplug
switch, or are the glowplugs connected (the 1HD-T will start without
them)?

Thanks, one of the sensors is for the overdrive, if the engine is not warm enought it will not allow it to shift(I was told this)>.

Just realised you have the 97 model. It will have the smaller tranny and will not be able to be put with the 1hdt.
You need an A442. They do come completelty hydraulic in the 90 model or electronic 92 on 80 series. There is a halleffect sensor for the tacho in the fuel pump that gives feedback to the tranny computer on engine speed, then there is temperature and whatever else.
Maybe a 5 speed would be in order?
