We came across a month ago, heading back to ACT.

We went via Wave Rock, good camp at the Breakaways on the way to Norsman. Just about anywhere across the bight, I look for the tracks that go north to the rail line, go a couple of k's up and look for a site.

Kimba rest stop; at bit noisy with trains running.

Remco near Waikerie, on the river.

And you could make Bendigo from there.

Hope this helps.

Hi

You must try Newman Rocks. 1Km north of the highway west of Balladonia.

Well signposted. High above surrounds. No facilities. Take alll your rubbish with you or this place too will be closed.

Much of the Balladonia area has had roadwiorks in at least December 2006 to Aug 2007 _ my trips. Many tracks in that area have been obliterated/furrowed,/closed in favour of crowded, very occasional, approved 24hr sites. Much of the other sites across are in very poor condition due to indifferent practices of travellers.

Merry Christmas - hope you have great trip

Chris

I have found the publication "Camps Australia Wide" (now at version 4) which lists free camps, national parks, State Forests, Rest areas and low cost caravan parks to be a really good investment

Camps Australia website

Perhaps you can drop a 'hint' to someone in the family about what a great xmas pressie it would be.

Most 4x4 shops, camping stores and bookshops stock it

Interesting how reading someone elses qusetion can send you off into the Internet Ethernet for hours :-)))

Whilst googling for Camps 4 Australia I came across a reference on the Camps Australia wide site that states they have worked with GPSOz to provide 75% of the Camps Australia wide GPS waypoints.

They have listed the GPS make and model that they can be used with.

I have a Garmin 276c which isnt listed so Ii hahve asked if they can be used - if they can will definitely be loading them in

Worth a look campsaustralia wide GPS POI's

I havent checked the Exploreoz website to see if they have them (not going to get caught TWICE on same post not supporting our own advertisers - hehehhe)

i am going through sa in a couple of weeks as part of trip around the block and there is a holiday pass you can get which covers entry and up to 5nights camping in most of the national parks it called a holiday parks pass it last for 2months and cost 44 buks cheap value i ya think about it!!! Plus once you get in to vic alot of the national parks are free to camp , just ring parkvic to find out if the campground has camping fees or not....And yes i agree with above post i have camps 4 and would not leave home without it!

Thanks everyone for all that information. I forgot something else We have a dog too, and a caravan. I hear that stops us from going into national parks for starters. So limits us to some places.
I have noticed that some of the free places have been closed. and even a lot of caravan parks down the west australian coast are closing due to the developers. There will be no where to go soon if that keeps up.

Hi Hugheys

Just watch for old gravel dumps, tracks into bush and old roads. There is an abundance of opportunities through WA and across the Nullarbor. We use "camps3" as a back up if we don't find something better at by a reasonable time. Most of the 24 hour rest areas are a bit noisy being close to the highway, but we have stopped in a few. Watch for ones that have bush behind them and tracks going well back if you like peace and quiet. Some are very limited with a fence behind. Keep you dog securely tied up as baits can be used on the stations.

I agree that if you go via the Hyden Norseman Road, the Breakaways is an excellent spot.

In WA they try and stop you getting onto old roads. In SA they leave them and they make good overnight stops.

I haven't been to Bendigo so can't help with the Victorian section. The way we went through Victoria, we mainly stopped in the State or National Parks.

Have a great trip and a happy Christmas

Motherhen
