Pressure Cookers and 76 Series Toyota

My wife manages a cookwares store and was telling me that they are selling pressure cookers hand over fist. Now these are not cheap at around $200 to $300.

Why, might you ask, would someone pay this sort of money for an item that speeds up the cooking process when the more modern technology of a microwave oven will do the same thing for as little as $80?

I had a bloke in the other day with a brand new 76 series Landcruiser, and other than the new V8 diesel this is rehash of 30 year old technology.

Why would he spend $65,000 on an essentially outdated machine when he could get a "modern" 4wd with all the gadgets for far less.

I guess both would answer the same way. A pressure cooker will cook a far more tender stew or piece of corned beef than a microwave could ever hope to. The 76 series will go places that would have it's more modern counterparts shaking in their boots.

Simple and basic does have its place. Now if only someone would make a DVD recorder that is as simple to use as my first VCR, I'd snap it up at any old price.

Hi Jim

I'm currently working on a reverse-cycle microwave. Not sure what it does yet. But I hope it's simple (too)

Merry Christmas

Reverse cycle microwave?
This concept reminds me about the misconception that incandescent lights emit light.
In reality, they are really "dark-suckers", which soak up darkness around you, giving the impression of light.
Keep up the research!

That's like the common mis-belief that helicopters can fly.

The fact is that helicopters are so UGLY the Earth repels them.

Or the belief that Pamela Anderson is pretty.

No-one has ever actually looked at her face.

Jim,
I look at Pamela Andersons face several times a day and she looks back adoringly.
Our dog is a white english bull terrier with big bazookas from having pups. Hence the name.
Cheers,

Yes
I thought it could turn out to be a freezer sort of thingie - but so far nothing's got very cold in it. It's where I put food that didn't turn out so good - hoping it might revert to original state so I could have a second go. Alas things seem just to get quite smelly. So far I've been trying to keep it really simple though.

Must get out more

Cheers
Chris

For all the pressure cooker enthusiasts out there - try this!

Get some corned beef (uncooked obviously), put it in the pressure cooker, cover with Bundaberg Ginger Beer, cook for 30-40 mins, turn off the gas and let it cool slowly for a few hours. Do not open until cooled.

No salt, no cloves, no bay leafs, no vinegar required........just Bundaberg Ginger Beer.

Sounds awful I know, but trust me - it is sensational.

Couldn't agree more Jim. The 70 series Landcruiser and pressure cookers - two of the most simple, reliable and versatile bits of kit you can own.

Why are cookware stores selling so many pressure cookers? Cos they saw Jamie Oliver use one on TV & are the must have item for xmas this year, no doubt doomed to live in the back of the cupboard with last years pie maker as in the end the convienience of the microwave will prevail :-))
Cheers Craig............

Craig,

My favorite saucepan next to the camp oven, is the old fashioned pressure cooker that travels in my kit all the time. Such a versatile piece of equipment for whipping up food quickly. Its what I cooked the black better bum burner curry in the Flinders trip.

I wouldn't go camping without my pressure cooker! As we only have a two burner stove and 3 adults to cook for, most of our trips have been during the drought--no open fires allowed--I have had to simplify my cooking strategies. Passing a 'Home Art' shop one day I saw these small PC's on one of the tables out front. After thinking about the pro's and con's for a week, I went back and bought one (4ltr) for $59. A 6ltr was selling for $89, I think. My system, when camping, is to have a one pot meal every second night. On the alternative night I use a grill plate for the meats and the pressure cooker for the vegs. It can also be used effectively to thaw/cook frozen pre cooked meals straight from the freezer when travelling all day. The pressure cooker is the only item I take out of the CT, between trips, to use at home. Google 'Pressure Cooker recipes' and a whole new world will open up to you.
