the biggest "lemon" was the Land Rover Freelander 1997-2006 models, of which 7431 were sold in Australia up to the end of 2006, figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries' VFACTS show. He said the vehicle was released to the public with 132 known faults, including engines that blew up after a few months, gearboxes that "disintegrated without warning and drive shafts that fell off while the car was being driven". Land Rover was the ninth most popular off-road passenger vehicle in NSW in the past year, with 15,227 vehicles sold in the state, said the RTA.

I can't believe 7431 people bought one. They did not measure up as a good vehicle on face value, let alone with so many issues.
The new release at least measures up on face value, but who would be game to buy one, especially now that Tata will be carrying the warranty.........do they have enough money??

Yes, i don't think even the P76 came remotely close to this one!
But all vehicles will have their faults, small or large. The real test of the product is for the manufacturer's willingness to accept their responsibility that there was a design fault, and to fix it beyond their warranty period, rather than just wipe their hands of it.
To this extent, while Nissan have been tardy on honouring liability outside warranty with their 3.0L diesels, it appears that Rover has been quite intransigent on fixing the problems outside the warranty period, let alone publicly acknowledging there was a serious design fault in the engine (their own internal memos noted it). This shabby treatment would make me shy away from buying any product in their range.
I note that the new Freelander is now being targetted at the luxury softroader market. This is a bit cheeky, given the poor past history of that marque.

Am I stirring again ? You bet. With many of the fish away, the bait goes largely un noticed :)
However, I have looked at some of LR's serious offerings, and its their reported lack of sensible customer relations that stops me from going for a drive in one.
Nissan, pretty much the same.
I've had one problem with my Toy, fixed under warrenty one week from its expiry. No sweat, no problems. (fuel pump).
Given the above, which brand do I look at? Not LR thats for sure.
The only thing stopping me from replacing
mine is lack of a suitable contender, and the $$$ to do so.

Hello Mr Footloose!, It was common knowledge by the year 2000, that the freelander was a heap of crap, Yep( even though i support the LR product) there dealer support and Service IS PATHETIC. What i have found over the last ten years is to stay away from the stealers , and find other sources that know the product
well, and there around if you look hard enough. I think this is the case with most vehicles now anyway, if you don't like being ripped off. Anyhow the defender is all ready for a xmas bash somewhere....lol. I hope, Haven't had to walk to many ks ih the last ten years,:))))
