Hi, we have an awning on our van app 3 yrs old and has heap of tuny pin holes in it that are bareky visible. We want to re-seal the awning if possible. Replacing it is too costly. Does anyone have any ides on how to re-seal a Cravan awning? I'd appreciate you help!

You could try putting some waterproofing spray on them. I bought a camper trailer some years ago & 1st thing we did was erect it in the garage and give it 3 coats of water repellent. Did it with a spray gun. We also did all the seams with a paint brush a few times. Canvas generally has a few small pinholes from my experience. Just don't inhale the vapour from this stuff - it stinks a bit.

Alternatively give it a good wash to remove any dirt and then apply Birkmyres waterproofing with either a brush, roller or spray.
Works well. I've found that if the canvas is given a good scrub even though it doesn't look dirty it quite often regains its waterproofing without any extra stuff being applied.
As has been said most canvas will display very tiny pinholes when you look upwards in sunlight, they close up when it gets wet and rarely leak as long as there isn't too much dirt to wick the moisture through.

Is it the vinyl type of fabric or canvas?

If it's vinyl I don't think there is much you can do with it. If it's canvas then the above suggestions will do the job. Birkmyres is good for canvas..

Thank for your reply - we appreciate it. The awning is vinyl, so any other replies about vinyl will be appreciated.

G'Day Bill,

While exitedly putting our van in the driveway the first time I managed to scrape along a tree on the boundary fence - very unhappy.

Put 20 - 30 little pin-hole sized tears in the awning.

I went to Prestige RV in Geelong and they had a small tube of clear liquid - bit like super-glue, which was meant to repair holes in vinyl awnings, etc.

Tube wasn't cheap at about $20 but closed the holes and kept the awning waterproof, even if SWMBO always reminds me of the reason we had holes in the first place.

Hope this helps

Rolande

G'day bill55, Yeah! we've had the same problem with ours but unfortunately( or fortunately depending on which way you look at it) we had put our awning up on the van for a B-B-Que we had. The night before we had big winds up here in the Yarra Valley, destroyed the awning.
Sorry the point of this is that we'd paid insurance for years so we made a claim, they paid up for a new awning(fitted) about $1000. Try making an insurance claim, I'm sure that with all the insurance we pay they'll not knock you back. After all it is the job of insurance make them/it work for you

Don't think it's the job (responsibility) of the insurance company 'to make it work it work for you'. I always understood that insurance companies only make good for accidental damage/theft etc. Anything else (if not in your policy) would amount to fraud or perhaps a false pretence. Both criminal offences.

You'll find tubes of tent "Seam Sealer" in prettywell most camping retailers, including BigW etc. We've used it on a few tents and awnings, including where canvas and vinyl have been stitched togeher. It's a clear glue similar in consitancy to Super Glue when it comes out of the tube.

When we bought our van the salesman told us to use liquid paper tp repair any pin holes in the vinyl.
We have only had one hole in 9 years and the liquid paper woked well; been there for 4-5 years now and doesn't look like moving
