on reading thread 52805, there was still a question not answered, "can you drive through a national
park with your dog."
well speaking to a
ranger in K.I. i was told because the WEST END HWY passes through a national
park and its the main drag to the otherside its ok to take your dog but it must not leave the car.

Shane
I'd be thinking that
Birdsville would cop a fair amount of dog poo and associated methane gas if it was cooped up in a car for three days whilst crossing the Simpson....!
LOL

i agree, but was hoping for an answer, i am not looking at taking any dogs across their but as its a through road and i would say a gazetted road, technically this could be done.

The question was answered, for Victoria, (and I doubt other states would differ) read the link I gave towards the end of the thread.

Another interesting point you bring up is the official status of the track (French Line).
Back in 2006 I was having a drink with a local fella in the Innaminka pub, and he told me that the track was only gazetted around 2001-2002, which surprised me a bit.

Shane
when we travelled the GCR a couple of years back 2001 i think
I phoned the NT office of Nat parks to see if we could travel through the Uluru-Katatjuta National
Park with a dog.
And was told no problems and if you get out of the car the dog must be on a lead, as we where travailing on the main road west-east its OK we where told that we could stop in the car
park at the Cultural centre and let the dog out for a drink and a stretch but she must be left in the car while we are in the centre...
things may have changed but we travel a lot of this country with the dog in tow..
and I try very hard these days NOT to break the laws of this land...
been there dune that, as you get older you must start to get wiser .. I hope :-)
Cheers
Richard

Gday Shane,
I have the current Desert Parks info, which is more comprehensive than the website, and neither make any reference to taking a dog through Witjira or
Simpson Desert Conservation
park.
To get a definite answer, you can phone
the desert parks hotline 1800 816 078. This puts you through to the
Port Augusta Office who run these parks - I've always found the staff there to be very helpful and sensible.
The Qld side (
Simpson Desert National
Park) is a little different - they simply tell you to "leave pets outside the park" because "they frighten wildlife, annoy other visitors and can become lost". You can also phone them on (07) 4656 3249.
Cheers
Phil
