this year i decided not to do Christmas dinner for the family. for the last ten years i have had an open house, and all were welcome, nobody had to bring anything at all, just themselves. but every year i put up with, this one not talking to that one, ill come when that one leaves, don't talk to my kids like that, all the normal family problems with family.
So this year i told them all I'm not doing anything this year.
What i did was just invited my parents for Christmas lunch, asked them not to give presents to the wife and i as we are not buying them any. We are going to donate to the RSPCA instead.
We had a quiet little lunch with healthy food that lasted over four hours. a few drinks and some time to just relax and talk. No stress and No kids. It was the perfect day and the best Christmas i have had in over ten years.
Sometimes we forget about the simple things in life, things that don't cost much but give you that lift and makes the not so good bearable.
happy new year to all
cheers Shane.

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family...
I had a quiet one with my 2 sons and daughter with a friend from work popping in with her dog to run around with my dog.
Sat in the backyard and laughed all arvo.....excellent

I am hearing you Shane, every year we get stuck with having to host the whole family.... and as the eldest son I am getting sick of it. We work like trojons all day for no thanks and then are buggered for Boxing Day.

mate you hit the nail on the head, didn't know how it would be taken but wife and i said stuff it, let the cards fall as they may. I think the two daughters were upset but its like
water off a ducks back to me. our main concerns now are our aging parents, its time to start giving them the time they deserve.
cheers Shane.

Yep we had a freeloader-free Christmas this year....
Just the wife, the kids and me, one of the rare times i am not on shift for christmas.
Since my wife's mother passed away a few years ago we haven't felt obliged to host a banquet for everybody and their dogs. Which, being the only daughter, my wife felt dutybound to do. We kept it up for the last couple of years but this year we said go your own way we are just having a quiet one for ourselves...
It was nice, peaceful and happy, you know like Christmas is supposed to be....
