Xmas accident

Hope everyone had a great xmas. We had an uneventful day till I decided to visit the cousins. When we got out their two of the boys were tearing around on motor bikes. Of course my 12 year could not wait to get on one. They found him a spare 80, and I managed to get a helmet and gloves on him.
This was only the second time on a motor bike, and he was trying to keep up with the others. I decided to sit on the veranda and keep and eye on him. Suddenly I seen him come off and a huge dust cloud erupted . Jumping in the vehicle I tore over to where he was. He was just getting up as I got their, covered in dust but no obvious breaks.
Took him back to the house where my wife was(luckily she's an rn)
He was extremely pale with a sky high pulse rate and stomach pain. The relos reckoned he just had the wind knocked out of him and would be fine after a lay down. Luckily my wife has a very good 6th sense and insisted we take him straight to casualty. Turned out he has a torn liver, and had a very narrow escape from death, as he could have bled to death internaly.
But by gee you do not realise how much you love your kids till something like this happens. Also their is a very good lession for all non medical people as the only external injury was a broken thumb.
But at lunch time today he was back to his old self giving cheek. He has to take it very easy for the next fortnight which will dampen our holidays a bit as we are heading off to the snowy for a week on the 30th
Cheers and be carefull Pete

Glad it turned out OK pete,
You can't be too careful IMHO when speed and young'uns are involved. The human body is fragile and we always seem to try and find ways to break it. Most of the time it works out but just every so often there are accidents, luckily your wife was on the ball with no external signs to go on you could have made a fatal error in judgement. Hope your boy is up and at 'em again soon have a happy season...

Sometimes it seems that we do have an angel sitting on our shoulders. Twenty years ago we had our ten year old daughter in hospital, seriously ill with a malignant brain tumour. We farmed her 3 brothers out to rellies for a few days relief from all the drama. Two of them went to the same Aunt, and were told not to go outside fence on their skateboards. Older one dares younger one to break the rules and promptly comes a cropper against the kerb. Aunt rings me at hospital to come get kid. Rush over there, take him home to keep an eye on him. Time to go back to daughter after tea, take son, along with in-laws. At hospital, standing bed-side, he slithers to the floor saying he's got a headache. Nurse won't give pain killer, says go to emergency. Wait there for 2hrs, finally sent for x-ray, (son had to be held down for this) results show he has a fractured skull, could have internal bleeding to brain. Eventually, (11:30pm) with in-laws waiting in car park for hrs, allowed to leave, Ma-in-law waiting in ambulance area to show us where the car is. As we walk along in unlit grounds, while I explained sons narrow miss, Mum stumbles in the dark, goes down and breaks her wrist. Get her in Dad's 4wd, drive around to adults section of hospital, where we are met and treated by same drs who have just treated son, they also know about our daughter, too. We were the talk of the medical fraternity for weeks. I had to take same son back to the hospital for another matter a few days later and, after reading the son's notes about his skull fracture, leaned towards me and said, as if assuring me that we weren't the worst case he had seen, "You know there's a family coming here who have a child with a brain tumour and their son also had a head injury and then the Grandmother fell over and broke her arm!"
You should have seen his face when I answered, "Yes . . . I know, that's us!"

Pete,

Glad to hear the young bloke is on the improve, and hope you & your wife are feeling better too!

We have young staff, usually 18-20 years, who think they're Mick Doohan, once they've had a few weeks on bikes, going mustering.

The ones that have been riding for years usually go okay, but the in-experienced ones are often having prangs.

Have sign in staff dining room, " SPEED THAT THRILLS, IS SPEED THAT KILLS".
But it doesn't always slow 'em down. They're all 6 foot tall & bullet-proof, just like we were!!!

Hooroo,
Bob.
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

thanks for your concern Bob, yes he is ultra competivie. He does race track bikes(pushie) arround an oval track which we hoped would be an outlet for his need for speed and has done well. Had a few busters but nothing serious. Lets hope he has learn a lession as it will put a damper on his holiday plans. We were going down to Tantangra dam for a week, me to flyfish and Michael and his mother were taking their mountain bikes.
Cheers Pete

Being a nursing sister with 25 years experience pays off sometimes, plus she has a very good sixth sense, which most mothers have. Plus his very high pulse rate.He should get out of hospital today .
Have a good one
