Hi, Many thanks to all of you who responded - very helpful.
Now, does anyone know if the existing box can be replaced by a second hand box from the petrol model or a previous model that did not have this weakness ??
Looking forward to your comments with thanks in advance.
Ian

The 1HZ diesel powered 100 series came with the same gearbox as a Prado, can't remember the actual model designation but yes they do fail. I've a friend that has an early 100 that he bought new and he has rebuilt and replaced the gearbox at regular intervals. This is a basically suburban vehicle that his wife drives most of the time and the heaviest load is the annual trip with the camper.
The heavier box from the petrol and tubo diesel models can be fitted but does require a bit of work to do, never mind the cost.

Ian,
I've been investigating this also (just in case of failure) as I can't see the benefit of rebuilding the 'weak' box numerous times, when it can fairly easily be replace with the heavier box. I tow a camper trailer, plus have lots of weight in the vehicle....winch, bar etc... but no turbo as yet.
There are a few threads on the
forum....best way to search is to enter R151 and/or H151. THe R151 is the box fitted to the N/A 4.2 diesel and is the lighter duty box, whilst the H151 is fitted to the turbo diesel and petrol 100/105 series. Was also fitted to the 80 series.
Apparently, the earlier boxes from the 80 series have the shifters in a slightly different place which makes fitting harder, so it is best to get one from the petrol 105 series. It is also best to update the flywheel and clutch which are bigger and there is a requirement for a different bellhousing. My information is not complete yet, but a search on this
forum (thread 28963 + other ones) will give you most of the information you need. Also do a google search with the same search fields and this will lead to other help.
All the best.
Cheers,
Mark

I have a '98 HZJ105, GXL. (1hz aftermarket turbo). almost 12months ago to the day ,I did my gearbox (manual), and researched a little to find that you could change boxes. I replaced my R151 with a H151 from a '04 petrol V8. Had to use the bellhousing and flywheel also which allowed for the bigger clutch too. Very easy conversion with no mods to drive shafts etc. Everything just bolted straight in, however just a small bit of panel beatingin the
well to allow the bigger box to fit (minor). I did the whole box and transfer. Sourced them from a wrecker in
Melbourne via (findapart.com.au) and they were sent/exchanged with old, via transport to central west NSW. Very happy now!!!! The gearstick does slightly sit further back, but does not bother me. This could be rectified quite easily before fitting the box (Neutral is about where 2/4/R were originally). I am very happy now with the heavier box and clutch. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me for further help.

keepingitreal,
Are the gear ratios different - and if so, what effect does it have on the overall driveability of the vechicle.
Thanks

From memory, only slight difference in ratios @ top end. I can't remember what 100kph was before. I think it is now just under 50rpm more @ 100 than before. Driveability is the same in my opinion, I just now have a heavy duty
box and clutch.
