Hi all,
I am probably going to go to Esperance and back to Perth next weekend and am looking at alternative routes. Most of the south west is farmland so I have to go around it to get any bush.

Here’s my proposed route and then I have a couple of questions please.

Perth to Burracoppin
Burracoppin South Road
Meranda North Road
Vultee Vengeance Plane Crash Site
King Ingram Road bypassing Bounty Mine and Mt Holland
Pass Lake Cronin, and about 28km east along Hyden Norsman road to a track that goes past Lake Hope. Along this track to Ninety Mile tank on Lake King Norseman Road.
Track around eastern side of Lake Sharpe to Dog Rock then south east to Esperance.
Back to Perth pretty much same way but past Wellstead Rock up the Lake Johnson Road past Honnman Ridge then Banker Mount Day Road into Marvel Loch.
Marvel Loch to Perth.

Does anyone know about tracks to the west of Lake Hope or anything about the lake?
Does anyone know what the track around the eastern side of Lake Sharpe is like?

Thanks for the answers!!!

Alan

Where's Davoe? He may know. You've got me looking at my maps books and dreaming again! You are certainly choosing some out of the way tracks equinox.

In 'Roads and Tracks of WA', King Ingram does not continue to meet the Forrestania Road. We came past Mt Holland on the Forrestania Road, but do not recall much other than roads to mines meeting it.

I have looked for any sign of the old track leading north from the 90 mile tank, but found no sign of anything - probably hasn't been used in 40 or 50 years. I was looking only out of interest, not any plan to travel on it.

Thread 49715 asks about Dunns track, heading from Peak Charles, and appears to pass Dog Rock then head south - sounds like that bit is in your plan. Anyone who has been that way may also know if the track heading towards Lake Sharpe is viable. Davoe's comments about the Dunns put me off trying it (i had seen it as a line on the map and a possible different way to go). Davoe is usually very positive about tracks.

Mining companies do seem to be exploring through much of the region. I have seen company vehicles travelling on the 90 mile tank - Lake King Road disappear; they must have gone down one of the few tracks there which were not obvious only a few years ago.

When we went to Kalgoorlie in September, there was a report in a local paper about someone from Norsemen who went out somewhere near the Norseman 90 mile tank - Norseman road and nearly didn't survive. He was a local and still got lost. Can't remember the details.

Hi Motherhen,

I've read about Dunns Track but it runs in a direction perpendicular to what I want, though it sounds like its overgrown.

Interesting that you say you did not find the Lake Hope Road (If I can call it that).

King Ingram joins up on the Natmap series.

Agree, Davoe might know something.

Cheers

Naa Dunno I left Kalgoorlie before i got to that region.
be aware that not all roads on natmap exist anymore or can be severly overgrown

I think you will fined Motherhen right

The King Ingram Rd does not travel through to the Forrestania Southern Cross Road, it was closed on the east side when we did the Sand Plan & Salmon Gums trip on the 10/03/07

But after the fires two years ago there are Two roads pushed through just north of the King Ingram Rd and at Brennard Road

Maybe the first road meets up with the King Ingram Rd? but there were big and i mean BIG signs stating fire access roads only...

we took the second one

Maybe give the SX shire a call

cheers and have a good one

Thanks Richard,

I may have to go south to the fence or north to Brennand Road. I'll have to see when I get there.

I want to see the Plane Wreck.

Was it you who put it in places?

I might take your advice and ring the shire.

Thanks

Hi equinox

Hijacking your thread isn't really helping you find those tracks which may or may not be accessible, but another option MAY be the 4wd track past Maggie Hays Hill. On our way east on the Hyden-Norseman, after camping at The Breakaways, i was watching for the turn to the lookout point at Maggie Hays. We went past a couple of roads signed to mine and mining camp then realised we had gone past, so one of these would have been the road to Maggie Hays Hill. On my map it continues as a 4wd only track to meet the Norseman Lake King Road a bit east of the 90 mile tank.

As we have discovered, a line on a map does not mean you can go through there, but this is shown as a 4wd track in my map book, like the Holland Track, rather than just surveyed line which in many cases no longer exists as a track.

Hi Richard

Amazing how many rock formations there are so close to home. People travel across Australia to see places often without looking at those closest to them. We have been through the area many times, both when living at Lake Grace, and when travelling through the wheat belt on farm business or returning from holidays. From your photos, the Buckley's look a bit like the breakaway country around Mingenew-Morawa, some of which is very colourful. WA must be covered by granite outcrops. There are some interesting formations.

A work colleague from the ES went to Wave Rock and said; how amazing and unique for a rock to form like that. I assured her there were dozens of other wave faces on rocks throughout the wheat belt, goldfields, and in SA. At Hyden they have just worked well at promoting their rock.

Hijack away Motherhen - I am reading all with interest.

I worked about 10 years ago for a while at Maggie Hays Mining Camp. I did drive the track past Honnman Ridge and Mt. Glasse once to the Norseman Lake King Road. If the Lake Hope Tracks are unviable I may do this track both ways.

Nice pictures Davoe!!

Cheers

Hi Alan & MH

We love visiting the Rocks around the state, today on the way back to Perth just West of Quairading there is a sign Toapin Weir, more then 3 years we have had the place at Bruce Rock, I've always have been going to call in and see what it is ...

well today we did and to our surprise it's a Rock with a dam wall built across it,

We have been amazed at the amount of water trapped and caught at Rock through WA..

Toapin Weir

Plot file

Then got home unhitched the CT unloaded the Troopy' then looked down and the right front is flat, I don't know.. LOL there got tubes in them and is still has 12 psi in them and can be pumped up..

Cheers

Richard

I don't know for this time of the year it's properly a lot of water, I would say it now only supplements the water supply..

The puncture will not be that it will be a creased tube... :-((

will be the third one in four years using heavy duty truck tubes slighty bigger then the 7.50 R 16 tyres, I will strip it tomorrow and have a look..

The trip you are looking at down between lake johnstone or lake hope looks good but this time of the year I don't know, but if you do travel these roads ,, be safe and give us a report.... :-)

Cheers

Get some up to date info on the Banker MT day road, we tried to use it a while back, from the south it was a very overgrown two wheel track and where it Xses the Holland Track it was only a bit better. The plenty of water this time of the year.

Just noticed on the Roads and Tracks map book that the Valtee Vengence crash site is shown between the Southern X and Emu fence roads but I am sure it's east of the Emu Fence road on King Ingram. If you are interested in reading about the history of it get "Vengence of the Outback" by Charles Page.

Hi Mac,

I have travelled on the part of the Banker Mount Day Road from the Holland Track to Marvel Loch on my quad bike in 2002. I will check the condition with the SX council. From all that was mentioned earlier in the thread I may cut this section out if necessary- at least I can get out through Hyden.

The only coords I have for the Crash Site are the ones Richard put on this site in places and they are east of the fence. I'll keep my eye open for the book.

Cheers

Equinox, Richard & Motherhen - thanks for the work you do in promoting this part of Australia. It is much appreciated.

[I was born in Moora, raised in Katanning, spend time with my B-I-L at Quairading, and think the area East, West & North of Esperance is brilliant. I spent a few days there this time last year (just before the big rain)].

Can't add any more to the track conversation.

It seems like an under visited area deservant of more visitors.

I have just got off the phone from the "Shire of Yilgarn".

They can confirm that the King Ingram does go through to the Forrestonia - SX road. However, they are recommending that vehicles should travel to the southern regions via the Emu fence.

Also, the Banker Mount Day road is open, but is not recommended to anyone but experienced drivers in 4WD vehicles.

They are not recommending use of the Hyden Norseman road but it is still officially opened. (poor lass killed last night in rollover)

Cheers
