Hey everyone...

Well after lots of internet research, I've decided to install my UHF radio in my 'new' 2005 prado myself. I'm all set - power straight to the battery until...I had a look for the grommets under the bonnet to run the wires through....

I know I wouldn't have been the first to do this, but can anyone point me in the right direction as to which grommet I should use? There are a number of big ones, but one quite high up on the firewall which is the size of a 10c piece...is this the best one to use?

Off to Streaky Bay and Coffin Bay in a week...I can't wait!!

Cheers

Not too familiar with the Prado but just installed one in 2003 hilux and I passed the power and antenna leads through the highest grommet and finished it off with a dab of silicone. No problems so far good luck. I'm off to fit my snorkel .

Just use one of the existing grommets that already has some factory cabling coming out of it. There is usually a big one for most Toyotas that carries bonnet release cable etc which is moulded with a 3cm tail sticking into the engine bay side. They will stretch a bit further to add a uhf power and aerial and will seal up against any new cable so no tape silicone required. Looks heaps better than cutting one of the other blanks and dabbing with silicone/taping etc.

Use a bright ouloured plastic coated coat hanger (easy to see behind dash when fed through firewall and plastic coating not abrasive to other wires), attach to your UHF wires and gently feed in next to the other cables from from the engine side. Look for your coat hanger feed up behind your brake pedal and pull through gently - easy as.

Thanks guys...I think I'll end up using one of the bigger grommets and go through that.

Another thing...any suggestions as to what size wire I should be using? I have a Uniden UH089 model...

Cheers

Margro,
also very important to place a fuse on the positive side (+) as close to the battery as possible. This will protect against fire incase of any mishaps.
