Good idea to check the warranty (extended too) make sure you understand how many 'dead pixels' they specify is 'acceptable' and if there are more what will they do about it. One area of LCD warranty that causes many new owners lots of anguish.

Although not a TV, I bought a Highlander DVD recorder/HDD recorder and it is a piece of crap. Been replaced once - it ran so hot it nearly caused a fire, then failed (Strathfield did not even blink an eye when replacing and will give you all the warranties you like - they will just keep replacing it and claiming back from the manufacturer). Navigation through menu's is difficult, it baulks at long DVD's and to be truthful we don't use it anymore and wrote it off as a waste of money - will buy a
well known brand name and pay the exytra $'s if I buy again.
Google the brand - their is like a technology
forum similar to this one and I think you will find Highlander get a so so response.
Note - this company rebrands similar product to many different names - it all is a low end stuff
Cheers

Dave save your money and buy a brand name.
As a reseller I have seen to many times the importer shut the doors because they have to many warranty claims and open up next week with the same product but with a differant name.
And there is not a thing you can do about it so kiss good by to the warranty.
The other thing is in 5 years or even less you may not be able to get spare parts or suport.
This is why we only sell brand name products that do cost more but we know the manufacture will be around in years to come.
At least with Panasonic, Sony, LG (maybe), Samsung and some other brands you know they are imported into Australia by the manufacture not some guy who rents a warehouse on a month to month basis and who may shut the doors with out warning.
As an example we had to get a fan controller board for a 15 year old NEC split air con (the customer wanted it repaired, we recondmended a new one), we phoned NEC and they had one in stock in
Melbourne, try that with some non main stream ones.
What I am saying is it might look cheap on paper but think in a few years time whether you can get parts and back up servive and surport.
It's your money but don't complain when it stops working in 10 months time and the importer has shut the doors.
Have a look around as brand name LCD tv's are very cheap, make sure it scans at 100Hz's .
We had a look at some 26 inch LCD's for around the house and for just over $1000.00 we got Panasonics with a scan rate of 100Hz and inbuilt HD tuner.
I think LG had one that was 106cm for around the $1800.00 mark.
By the way don't expect to sit less then 5m from the screen.

If your goint to spend that much then why not get a good brand like a Samsung, I just got a 66cm HDTV that also doubles as a PC monitor , I can preset the time/date a few days ahead and when the time comes it switches over to TV even if I'm on the PC/Internet so I don't miss a program, the quality is A1 , A 106cm Samsung is only a few dollars more .If you
shop around you;ll get one at the right price.

Dave the bigger the screen the bigger the pixels are, a smaller screen is always better to look at as the pixels are smaller.
The larger the screen the more grainier it looks close up hence the further you have to site away.
A CRT TV still give a better picture.
Have a friend who works for ABC Television as a program director and in the control room they use CRT monitors due to the better picture and colour definition.
Have a look at this site.
