Has anyone rented one recently? What were your costs, and how was your experience?

Depends on your requirements They are not cheap to rent $17a day???
If you want one for an extended trip its probably better to buy a Motorola 9505 or 9505a and get a telstra sim with international roaming enabled and away you go at about $3 plus a minute tho. Look on the trader here or Ebay.
They go for about $1200 but you can resell it when finished with it
DONT BUY A GLOBALSTAR OR A TAIT OR AN ERICSSON That is not on the IRIDIUM network

Footloose

I shouldn't be saying this, but find out who your Telstra Country Wide manager is and have a bit of a yarn.

Do it right, and I think you'll find he'll loan you one, provided you can convince him there will be a bit of publicity out of it (maybe an article in the local paper).

PS Don't tell anyone else about this devious plot...

LOL

Regards

Kim

A friend who runs a bike tour company used this ploy so successfully that the phone is now on "permanent loan".

Footyl,
Belated Mary Christmas, Old Man (in red suit, I trust?)
Mate, our phone is probly free 'till next August. You pay the rental and your calls, and it's all good. Too easy.
Jeff.
