If someone is looking for a "tough" Notebook for travelling, have a look at this site below.

Although only 4 gb these Notebooks have no moving parts - a Solid State Hard Drive. Will hold plenty of photos, MP3, access to Internet etc... This is the way of the future.

It would cover the needs of most travellers and it's shockproof.
They are available on eBay.

People have put XP on these - but I cannot see the flash drive lasting with windows writing to it all the time.

BIL got one for Christmas and it runs XP easy, Ozi too is a breeze, with a 8 gig flash drive all maps etc work really well.

What about one of these:
Panasonic Toughbook

We use them at work and they are TOUGH. I know as I throw the thing against the wall quite regularly due to the c%#p software that is inflicted on us....and.....Windoze.......

The pricetag might be a little high for most, though.

Cheers,

Mark

You know it's interesting how everyone seems to worry about the hard drive getting damaged from bouncing around when travelling. I have had several notebooks over the years, none of which have ever had any hard drive problems. I had one screen fail due to heat buildup due to the lid being closed (heat from processor, not screen as that was always off).

The laptop is mounted behind the back seat on the cargo barrier and I use a remote screen on the dash. I run Oziexplorer in moving map everywhere I go as I like to log the track files. This means the hard disk is always active. I have been on some extremely long, badly corrugated tracks without a problem.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but laptop hard drives are very robust - a lot more robust than desktop drives.

Now that I've posted this, I hope my luck doesn't change - touch wood!

Cheers

I'm the same have ran laptops over the years and both still work, I now have an in car computer with a 160 GB mobile hard drive mounted in silicon block its coming up to a year old (feb) and it is side mounted and works fine...

I still like new toys ...

run Toshiba Satellite all the time in vehicle and away everyday and never had anything packup. Keep them 2 to 3 yrs and then buy new model.
