A happy and healthy new year too you all.
I am looking at an air compressor for the troopy and have narrowed it down to an ARB $355, big red $? and Max air $? or Blue tongue.
A search of the archives tells me that the above are probably the best and the BT may be better suited for hot climates. I am waiting for a bit more info to come from opplock, but thought i would
check with the learned crew on this site as
well.
Regards
Boo Boo

I have an ARB fitted under the bonnet and although it is reliable, it can be repaired (you can buy spares from ARB) unlike many others where they are practically disposable. The ARB is good for continuous operation but it is not a very high volume compressor, unlike the BT. So if you want to fill big tyres faster, go with the BT or Big red. I am wishing I had bought an endless air, which is basically an airconditioer compressor that runs off the fan belt. a bit more outlay but will fill tyres 10 times faster than any 12V one...
my 2 cents for what it's worth

ARB are supposed to be releasing their new one this month after announcing it in one of the fourby mags late last year. Write up was impresive but they had a delay with manufacturing. I am waiting on one to see how good it is

I have a ARB one that I mainly use for the lockers. I do pump the tyres up from time to time but they take ages due to the size of the pump. If you are going to be doing allot of pumping then go for something bigger

4x4 Australia had a
test in the December mag that was taken out by the new high volume ARB unit.
They are much quicker than the old ones.

Do you have the specs on the new one readily accessible to compare to the older version?
Some lowlife stole my ARB one from inside the vehicle (in a secure
carpark) a couple of months ago and i only found out AFTER trying to reinflate 4 tyres from 18psi........aaarrgh.

The old ARB one was 36L/minute (no load, numbers from ARB catalogue) and wasn’t included in this
test.
Compressor performance figures from 4x4 Australia’s (I assume the L/min is under no load):
ARB High Volume: 75.1L/m 0-30psi 2 min 17 sec. $349
Max air II: 72L/m. 0-30psi 2 min 50 sec. $390
Big Red: 36L/m 0-30psi 3 min 52 sec $399
Blue tongue: 45L/m. 0-30psi 5 min 9 sec. $395

Hi
Have had an ARB compressor for years and am quite happy with it, it is mounted in my Troopy behind the right hand front head light. Neat fit but an absouloute bastard to change globes(as i found out this week!),compressor has to be removed to access globe.
Still happy with it though.
Cheers Lyndon

Ive had the Maxair after it look out the honours in some
well published tests in various magazines.
I snapped the plastic filter off but the new ones have an all metal unit
It will pump 4 x 33 in tyres from 17 to 33psi in about 11 mins plus some set up time.

HI Boo Boo
I have 8-10 year old ARB mounted behind driver. Has given good service but noticed a new noise recently.
It pumps at rate of 7lb per minute on skinny tyres between 18 to 50psi. Set your watch by it -
well nearly. I think this is too slow and have envied those who can air up faster.
Made the big mistake of getting the little blue ARB compressor designed for the ARB diff lock. - Should have gone for the full sized new ARB to get better performance - and backup. Much better thinking.
The constant air idea is also appealing.
Best regards
Chris

Sorry not entirely clear - when I fitted the ARB difflock last year, I had the option to buy an additional compressor - either another full sized one which could also be used for tyre pumping, or the little blue job which has no other role but to operate the diff lock.
There, that's better.
Chris
