Maybe time to change to an 80 series

I LOVE my Pajero.

She and I have done 3/4 of the must do tracks.

Her down point is power. Towing the boat into a stiff head wind is a bit embarrasing.

I have come across a very nice 1996 80 series with 4.2 diesel that is too cheap to pass up. Not all of the mods I wanted but cheap enough to get them myself.

Just asking the question has anyone gone my path and regretted it ?

By the look of your 'profile' your Pajero is very well kitted out, and you must know it pretty well. If GRUNT (or lack of) is your only concern, why not have a l'il afterburner (turbo) fitted?? Might be a better option in the long run..

Oops- sorry. Just noted it is already turbo....
Well then, permission granted. Get the Tojo- but don't expect a rocket ship although it will 'pull the skin off a rice pudding'.

I am not expecting anything amazing. I am a diesel purist and would never own anything else.

I am guessing the 80 is not a turbo???

Even so I think you would love the extra room in the car for gear, the HUGE range of after market gear for the 80

wanna give us a rough idea on the price they are asking?? :)

Cheers Stefan

Cheap ! Haha . Lets say under 6k with dual tanks , new bfg muddies , dual batteries, winch / winch bar and the lit goes on. No lockers

Bloody hell, buy it, spend around 20k on a chev conversion.

Have all the power you need for around 30k

Cheers Stefan

Jason

What size boat ? I had a 4.2 NA 80 series to tow an 18ft glass boat (1.4t) and it ended up being a pain and in the end with no power in reserve I thought it a little unsafe. Hills killed it. Upgraded to a V8 petrol 100 series and love it for towing and economy towing is only slightly higher in the petrol due to me having to work the diesel so hard. I loved my 80, but with all my beach work it was starting to turn into a dog.

Cheers

it is a 15ft but weighs 800kg. I agree with you on the hills but I am happy to fit a turbo up to it with decent intercooler at the price I am looking at

My 80 series has now done over 300k and has given no trouble at all. Trust you get a run like mine.

Handbrakes are non-existant. Mine is non-turbo but has been everywhere towing a CT. I gave mine a suspension lift as the spare wheel acts as a sand anchor in the desert. Sometimes when things got serious I took it off and put it on the roofrack.

How often do you tow the boat into a stiff head wind?

Rather like women: my feeling is stay with what you know... generally :)

I suspect I detect a little of "the grass is always greener" syndrome - what do you reckon?

on the run over to Port Lincoln you either hit the head wind on the way to Pt Augusta or leaving it. It is a semi highway and they get real bleep .

I am just looking for 100kph and the Pajero will do it but using 95 litres of diesel to do 400klm is a joke.

Jason

Under $6k is about half the Redbook price for a DX or GXL 1996 80 series. Check

http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/vehicle/prices.php?id=105401

It might be worth getting an inpection by a 4WD mechanic to see why its so cheap.

Thankyou all for your input.

My Pajero has been by far the best 4wd I have owned. I don't mean highway running but when you are right in the thick of it.

The downsides of the Pajero are the tank is just not big enough hence the range could be better.

Towing a camper trailer long distance is pretty much out of the question. I could go bigger turbo and water cooled intercooler to try and fix this but I recon it is good money after bad. The donk is only a 2.5 td after all.

Superb on it's own at 3000rpm on the higway, great fuel economy when off track ( 700k's off 95 litres ).

I am getting married and will be having kids sooner than later. I figure if I don't do this now , I will be not in a position to do it later.

You will know if I bought it as my Pajero will be for sale in the trader section at some later date.
