Gday Al,
You can get insurance for anything Al, if you pay enough money.
Realistically you cant do it.

We've all asked this question in the past, and the answer is basically no. We used to have a mob that did it but they don't any more.
Check with your motoring body. In Qld the RACQ has a "plus" service which will recover you if you're on any gazetted road on the mainland of Australia. So Fraser and Moreton Islands are out.
The Simpson is out. But there are recovery services at both ends of the Simpason (that will cost you your first born).
The "plus " service costs a little more, but if you break down it will definately be worth it.

al

As per other replies insurance to cover recovery in remote locations i.e. canning simpson etc would be impractical IMHO.
I think the best insurance you could have in case of such a breakdown would be HF radio/sat phone or for extreme emergency EPIRB.
I think most will agree the safety of you and your passengers is your priority

I saw on a forum somewhere the costs of recovery from MT Dare or the other end of whichever track it was and it was similar to this
Drive out to you $2-$3 per km. Tow you back Double whatever the original was PLUS $65 an hour out and back all at hourly rate
The other end was even more expensive.
This is a badly remembered recollection, someone will probably correct me

We got stuck 450k west of Alice Springs on the Tanimi Track and the roadside assist via RACV Total Care was on it's way, when we finally got to the Tanimi Gold Mine and phoned to say "Don't worry, cause we're on the road again!". They were about 150K along the track by that time... no extra charge.

When we did the CSR in 2005 (gee time flies) there was a sign up in Kunawarritji (well 33) advertising towing from there to Pt Hedland for $5000, remembering that that was about 21/2 years ago so has probably doubled by now.

roadside service and the plus extra still only covers you upto where a standard 2wd vehicle can go ,
anything more is at your cost
