Just rebuilt 1987 2H motor, have good oil pressure at 75 psi when started, after 2 minutes drops to 40 psi and then after 10 minutes drops to 0 psi. Oil temp about 40'C. Anyone else had a similar problem?

Julz.
Yes this is a problem with the oil pressure relief valve. Most motors have a steel ball on a steel seat, but the 2h has a steel piston sliding in an aluminium bore and the excess oil escapes from a hole in the side of the bore. what happens is the aly bore wears and the piston jams open. The fix is to bore out the bore about 2 thou to get rid of the rough surface inside and then make a new piston 2 thou oversize but most importantly about 6 mm longer so it slides on an unworn part of the bore, the piston has to be made from a steel that can be flame hardened. Eric.

As a young kid I rebuilt a motor that showed the same characteristics. My mechanic mate reckoned it had oil pressure as it didn't display the sounds you'd expect like at cold start up. Pulled the motor out and pulled it down to source the problem as you do at this youthful age!! Eventually found a bit of gasket goo covering the inlet of the sender unit. Obviously a lesson learned for later life..more brains and less brawn nowadays.

Pull out your sender unit or perhaps take off the rocker cover and see whether oil is pumping to the rocker gear.

Good luck anyway!!

julz,
Had a problem with oil pressure in my 2H also. (too high) As Eric says the problem was in the oil pressure relief valve. Cut off two rings of the spring and no more problem. Elcheapo fix but so far working ok for approx two years.
Cheers,
Bros.
