Ok today i finally got the time to rip the alternator out of the 4x4 ( although i have still been driving it all week ) took to the auto electrcian ( who is also a friend ) and he will report to me later today ... My question is... ( as i asked him also ) Is there an aftermarket Alternator for the nissan 4.2 TDi (99 ) rather than the Original nissan part ? The nissan ones will require me to put a second morgage out and give rights to my first born .....
and if so - does anyone have a price -- just want to be prepared if the news is bad as i want to go away this weekend ......

Go to the wreckers if it's bad and you might get some good service out of a second hand one.

Just trust your friend who is the auto-electrician.
If the brushes are worn, he can replace them.
If its the internal regulator, then same deal.

I'd hate to think how many alternators get replaced at great expense for minor problems.

I am with Phil,

if you get yours overhauled you know exactly what you have in the vehicle and it shouldn't cr..p out on a dark and stormy night.

ps. get the bearings done at the same time.

Ended up buying a S/h from the wreckers $175.00 with warranty --- as i was meant to have heard back from my friend -- and have not as yet -- and as i am going away this weekend and working the next 2 nights -- i wont have time to chase him ---

so when he rebuilds it - i will have a spare and will tell you all what was actually wrong ....
