I am currently in the market for a dual wheel carrier/Bar. I want to mount one spare and an outboard motor. There are only two products in the race at the moment, the Kaymar and Opposite Lock.
The Kaymar does not offer the outboard solution and have stated any alterations to the carrier will void the warranty. Opposite Lock do offer the outboard bracket and i must say the product does look good.
I am after any
feedback on the quality of the opposite lock product or any other alternative products or suggestions people have. I am driving a 100 series 2000, live axel and I am towing a trackabout trailor with the boat rack.
Cheers all

Have had an Oppy Lock unit on for 13 months. Done a few rough country trips, as
well as the compulsory dirt & bitumen
miles to get to Nirvana - the bar unit is still OK.
Why Oppy Lock? -
well, I liked the cut outs to accommodate the high lift jack points on each side; liked that the tow bar remained; and liked the lower prices than the Kaymar. A referral from a
well known forumite whom I have met also helped.
I specified LED tail lights; a consistent and repeating error after several remedial actions is that on left hand turns the indicator goes like crazy, but it is OK on the right.
The strut on the LH carrier let go at the mounting bracket on the pivot point on the rear bar - poor workmanship, IMHO. It was replaced by Opply Lock here in
Adelaide, in situ at my house.
Would I buy another? - yes.
Hope this helps

Thanks Rick,
Are you saying the problem with the indicator was because you specified LED lights. Would this have happened with standard globes.
Is the problem being fixed by Opposite lock or have you agreed to put up with it. For the money spent i would expect the product to be in perfect working order or at least a guarentee it will be rectified.
Cheers be good.

No, not saying it's LED's that cause the problem - I only mentioned what I specified as different to standard.
Oppy Lock have fixed indicator once, but it's a real pain to have to go back to them, so I am just tolerating it. The rapid timing of the indicator operation is a bit of an Irish problem, if you think about it - its a problem, then it's not; it's a problem, then it's not; it's a problem, then it's not (get it?) I regard it as a very minor issue - the broken bracket was a serious issue, & they gave good service - actually in my carport - how easy/good was that?

Hi Kaymar,
Mrs Mick T here. We also have a OL dual wheel carrier. I am extremely pleased with the look & functionality of the product. Ours is about 12mths old & no probs... nor should it really. I found the service from the local guys (
Toowoomba) to be exceptional as
well. Although the fact that they know hubby on sight now is not a good thing for my credit card.
ciao, Chelle

Hello Mrs Mick T
Have you guys given the bar a good work out. For example has it gone over 500,000 corrigation or been tested through any other challenging country.
We intend to take it all over the top end, so it will be
well and truly put to the
test.
Cheers Mrs M.T

I have a Kaymar with a spare wheel .
Knowing what I do now about GVM legality and the weights of things like Kaymar rear bars , I would say store your spare on roof racks and forget the rear bar . Put the motor in the camper or in the car .
Sorry , I know that's not what you asked BUT.........maybe you should run your vehicle over a weighbridge if you have not already !
Cheers ,
Willie .

Good point Willie.
I am going through the same sort of thing with the Patrol, trying to get it set up for our trip to
Innamincka and beyond. The weight issue raises it's head all too often and I know that if I stick a rear wheel carrier on, the weight will sky rocket, especially over the rear end and with the camper on.
Even though it will be a major pain to get the tyre, I will be storing it on the roof basket, as you suggested.
Cheers Greg

We recently done a two month trip up in the Cape, i carried the spare on the roof for that trip. I did not have a boat or outboard to be concerned about.
I will get all the stats and crunch the numbers prior to making a final decision. Thanks i appreciate all advice, even when the information may not be what i want to hear.
Cheers

Kaymar001,
Is it at all possible to mount the outboard on the camper. Trackabout
seem to have a good reputation for quality and might be able to make a mount for it to go onto the rear of the camper. Obviously this will be determined by the weight of the motor. Just another thought.
Greg

Hi Kaymar!
Nope, more around.
Firstly look here.
Secondly call this block (
http://www.allterrain4x4.com.au) - he is making DWC in his workshop and can make any custom configuration. I have DWC from him and can not stress how much I am pleased with quality of product. Do not mention that it is heaps cheaper then Kaymar one.
Cheers
Serg

KSV, thanks for your response, i actually sent him an E-Mail last night. The strong arm product does look good and it offers every thing i require. Thanks for your feed back it helps if you can get some genuine
feedback on its quality.
If anyone else out there have used or know of anyone using the Strong Arm from All terrain i would be pleased to hear from you.
Thanks

Hi,
I purchased a Strong Arm dual wheel carrier from Dragon at All Terrain 4x4 about 18 month ago and I am/was very please with it. It was for a 2000 series live axle which I wrote of 12 months ago (front damage only). I work just around the corner from them and a few people from my work use them and we are more that happy with their service. I am pretty sure that they already do an outboard motor carrier to replace on of the arms. It just happens that the DWC is still sitting in my garage in near perfect condition. I was hoping to buy another 100 Series but I have just purchased an FJ73 so I may be able to help.
David.

I have a '99 live axle 100 series with Kaymar Dual wheel carrier bar. It has had a hard life with two 285/75R16s and Codan antennae as
well as it's life as a tow bar.
It has stood the
test of time and 195,000ks.
It is regularly checked and has had not a fault except a cracked wheel carrier - the bracket more particularly in the middle of one of the wheels. It was repaired with a welded plate at 150ks and has been fine since.
Cheers
Andrew.
