Can anyone with knowledge in this area give advice on which of these units would be the best to get please.

Both seem pretty good but with all the sales hype, they seem pretty much the same...but what aren't I being told???? is the question.

Your thoughts please?

Cheers

No worries Skippy..

Does the 720 give a voice warning when approaching turns etc..

IE "turn left at John St in 100 metres"?

Cheers

Andrew
TomTom GO 720

But if you got one of these
Garmin Nuvi 250W

you could add this to it .
OZtopo V2

Then you'll have something worth having.

I,ve only just began using Tom Tom and have found many inaccuracies especially in regard to country road alignments. I think the data base has been aligned with local council road planning routes and not actual road locations. Especially at intersections with major highways, the Tom Tom looses where it is at the intersection, probably because the road has been re-aligned. Can't speak for any other nav. systems.

Hi Andrew, TomTom Go 720 does give out the name of street but the PDA version doesn't.
I found the Custom Points of interest on the Tom tom range are the best ever, I hate the Garmin POI in the Nuvi range of GPS receivers, with Tom Tom you can edit, change, add delete all from the receiver.
I know nothing about Navman I've only heard bad reports.

The ONLY negative about Tom tom is you can't add Shonkymaps, or other third party maps.

Like others have said you can download other country maps without problems or costing a fortune My PDA version came with UK maps but i don't use it, with the PDA version you can also install OziCe and install maps and have the best of both worlds.

I have just recently brought the Nuvi 760 but not impressed , maybe I like the old fashioned GPSr where I can ediit waypoints and use many other features which Nuvi's don't have.

I don't know why anyone would want to veiw jpgs and listen to Mp3's where i do have the state of the art Nissan patrol Radio cassette, Cd player,
Ok made mp3's don't skip rough roads.

next you'll be able to buy a GPS with a camera , and make mobile calls from it.

Cheers Skippy

Thanks Skippy

Have you used your 720 (or anyt omtom) in the country...someone mentioned they were not happy with the tomtom in the country as it got confused with intersections....roads were incorrect etc

Any experience here?

I'm using the TomTom Version 6 on my PDA which has the same maps as the Mapsource version 7 , 80% of the maps come from the Sensis / Where Is company.

I also use the Nuvi 760 with Mapsource Version 8 and do find some additional roads added, I know with TomTom and mapsource you can add newer maps but not sure about Navman, there has been some posts about it.

I'm still not sure when Tom tom will release Map version 7

I still think the ipaq rx5965 is a good unit for about $400 which you can also run Ozice , this unit comes with tom tom preinstalled.

There are a few people here that use it, also has wifi and has all the pda stuff which the GPSr don't have, only problem is the light in screen isn't as bright as the GPSr like Nuvi and Tom Tom 720

Andrew,

"Does the 720 give a voice warning when approaching turns etc..
"
IE "turn left at John St in 100 metres"?

To answer your question precisely, No and Yes.

In standard configuration TomTom will broadcast-

"Turn left in 1 kilometer"
"Turn left in 100 meters"
(depending on the optional configuration you set up)

If you download and install a Computer Generated Voice (They are included on the supplied CD) then you will get:-

"turn left at John St in 100 metres"

Only when the Computer Generation Voice option is installed, do you get spoken street names.

So basically, yes the TomTom 720 does this and does it very well, just not by default.

It seems that the Tom Tom has a good few supporters.
Does any one know if you can get software for use overseas. EG UK?

Any one having knowledge with this would be appreciated?

John,

Yes, it was the main reason I chose TomTom. Maps are available for UK & Ireland, Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore & North America & Canada, South Africa and I probably missed a couple.

As a matter of fact TomTom has a 50% discount up until the 31st January 2008.

I recently bought the UK & Ireland maps for AUS $69.95.

TomTom

Last year I purchased and downloaded the Map for Hong Kong and after loading it, found the street names were in pigeon Chinese. Complained to TomTom who replied the maps are usually done to suit local population but agreed Hong Kong was special and would forward the request on to their development department.

Well, went to Hong Kong where the map was of minor value because the street names are in English and Chinese.

Blow me down if about 6 weeks later I received an automatic download of a revised map, in English.

This didn't really help with my trip, but it is good to see they actually sit up and take notice.

John you can buy maps for many countries, simply choose the required map from www.tomtom.com

It doesn't matter which navigator you go for, they all use Sensis maps for Australia. The only difference is how they interpret the maps for you.

I have a 710, the forerunner to the 720 and it doesn't have the option of having street names spoken whatever voice is chosen.

If I had the chance again I would opt for the TomTom one. I have no need to use bluetooth on it nor do I want to play mp3's through its tiny speaker and this is basically all you get for heaps more dollars.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Neil
