Howdy folks, hows things?
Buguar it, I'm steering away from the 4.5L Twin Cam 80 series on dual fuel. I love the power of it but cant afford it, especially as gas is now only half the price & i dont trust the government (especially with excise duties 2 come)
im looking at a few 80 series diesel cruisers. One example is 1 1990 1hz with 275 on clock with 1 owner/ full service history for $13000 & looks good. Another is 1994 1hz with 'most' servicing documented with 420 on clock for $8500....
Do I gain much out of 4 years of 1hz/ 80 series upgrades? Howd did the wheel bearings compare? which models have computer chips & which dont? are there any other worthwhile upgrades to know about between these years & upwards? Were the diffs upgraded to stronger ones?
how rare are the better turbo diesels? 1hdt or something?
Cheers in advance...

In late 1992, there was an upgrade to coincide with the release of the 4.5 litre petrol motor - so all models got bigger brakes and 16 inch wheels; triple synchros on the manuals, better
suspension (but likely to have aftermarket now anyway). Don't think there were any changes to the 1Hz or the diffs.
Factory turbo 1HD-T ran from 1990 to 1994 - had the famous big end bearing issue, which was easily fixed. 1995 onwards had the 1HD-FT multivalve turbo diesel - its the pick of the 80series but I'd guess its outside your budget.

Hi guys,
The early 1HZ had bearing probs as
well but this was OK after sept 92 with the changes to brakes etc.
I used to change my 1HZ bearings every 100,000km ($300incl parts and labour) just to be safe and they had marks on them. Non turbo.
Otherwise a great and reliable truck.
I had 5 of them doing commercial tours.

Dave
