Hi all,
I have a Series II Discovery (2002 Td5 auto) & was after some advice on what spares to take on a long remote trip? It has rear air shocks, upgraded computer chip, extra oil cooler for trans. This is my first Auto Diesel 4x4 - I had a 94 petrol a few years ago that did an alternator - luckily I was coming into Katherine when it died.
Cheers

Jason,

This list would apply to all vehicles not just the Disco.
Before you go
1 Have the vehicle checked by a 4WD mechanic, not the place where the vehicle was brought from. Hopefully the mechanic has done a bit of travelling and should know what to look for.
Tyres. Fit new tyres before you go. The two spares should be as good as the tyres that you have on the vehicle and the same size and tread pattern. Both tyres should be on rims unless you have the gear and knowledge to change a tyre by yourself.
Shocks. Change them before you go and if the old ones are OK carry them as spares. This applies to leaf sprung vehicles, change the shackle bushes. If the battery is more than 12 months old replace it and make sure that it is clamped down properly.
2 Things to carry.
Work shop manual.
Belts. Put new ones on before you go and if the old ones are still good take them with you. That way you know that you have the correct belts.
Fluids. Have them all replaced before you go and take some spare. Engine oil, brake fluid, auto trans (the grade that they recommend for your vehicle) coolant and diff/gear box oil.

The other things are tools that will fit the nuts and bolts on your vehicle. Cable ties, fencing wire, fuses, electrical tape.

Also have a look at the Topics section and then Spare Parts and Tools.

Geez Wayne, you must get a good salary package buying a new battery every 12 months.....:-)

I need to get at least 5 years out of mine.

Belts are cheap. If you feel the need to change them then why keep the old ones ? If they were suspect when you took them off then they are suspect now - throw them away !

If you carry a full set of spare springs then your total weight is likely to be the cause of a broken spring. Carry one front and one back maybe but not a full set.

Several hose clips of various sizes. Short length of fuel hose, heater hose and radiator hoses.

I would also fit a low water alarm (see add on this site)

1. Lots of spare oil and rags to clean up the leaks.

2. 1 spare of anything that has 'Lucas" stamped on it.

3. At least 4 spare axles......

I could go on but there is only so much space on this forum......

Pathetic??.....more than likely.

Unoriginal??.....absolutely as every single avenue for sh1t stirring Landrover drivers has been covered over the past 50 years!

Uninformed?? ....absolutely NOT.........

had this for about 10 years.......... and whilst it took me all over the country, it wasn't without significant amount of $$$$$$$$$$$ to keep it running.

Ahhhhh, drivers of LR's are so faithful to the fold, but you're the first I've found with a gross humour deficit

Cheers and tears,

Mark

The Disco II is a totally differant car too the Disco 1, for a start it doesn't have Lucas electrics, they don't leak oil and they are more reliable, more powerfull, longer, have more cargo space, stronger 24 spline axles and so on.

As for the other comments, don't know about those problems, in all the outback touring i've done in our Disco II haven't had any issues with wheel nuts, key fob or anything else.

This is what i take.

Coolent
belts
spare top radiator hose
extra spare tyre
nuts and bolts
tyre levers
cable ties
gaffa tape
WD40
tools
spare air hose for my locker
filters oil and air
Use some sort of pre-cleaner if you have a snorkle
grease and grease gun (for tailshafts)
water.

and most important BEER ;-))

Baz.

Take a couple of air filters, diesels are chronic asthmatics and in my experince (Series1 - V8) , Disco parts aren't always easy to find in the bush.
If you're planing to travel more than your regular oil change mileage (10,000kms) factor in an oil change on the trip. If you change your own, take oil and filter with you.

I heard about a bloke who always takes a full set of exles when he goes bush. Funny thing is, he always needs to replace at least one axle every trip. His mates never carry axles and never need 'em. I reckon it's the extra weight he's carrying.

The most useful spare I take is a wire coat hanger.

Have fun out there.

Hi there
This might sound silly, but before you go, make sure you can get the wheel nuts off each of your wheels. I have come across 2 discos in the outback which have been stranded because, try as they might , they couldn't get the b****y wheel nuts off to change a wheel. Something to do with those silly huge nuts they use and the way the rattle guns tighten them (I think).

That is a problem at times with the defender and disco, if you don't use a anti seize product on the nuts, studs, to start with.

i carry three lenghts of pipe aprox 1mtr long having them so one sldes into the other, makes for good leverage if need be!!!.

At least the wheels don't fall off, and studs don't break..lol.

Cheers Axle.

Any mechanic or tyre fitter that does up a wheel nut with a rattle gun without the correct torque limiter attachment or without using a tension wrench needs his a**e kicked! Overtightening can also lead to warped brake rotors and is not on these days.

Tessa's right,
I've been stuck with a wheel nut that would not budge on my Disco. Best trick is, before you go take 'em all off an smear copper grease on the studs.
