Not having a working knowledge of how all this works, can someone, in plain English, explain what David is doing when he says that a new Server System is going to be used?

What is a Server System and what does it do?

One central computer that holds all of EO that we all access via the internet.
He is shifting EO from the old boring server to a newer, faster, bigger and prettier one. ;-)

I forgot.... I hope that helps explain the intricacies of the server and the operation of EO on the www. in a simple way :-)

John,

I think that I have the idea now.

So in 4WD terms he is going from a Patrol (old boring server) to a Troopie (newer, faster, bigger and prettier).

Thank you

Thats it exactly Wayne.

It takes some people quite sometime to come to terms with the Superior performance of a Troopy and poor old David is just waking up now. :-))

My Pootrol is much prettier than my troopy...

(but I'll bet the GU won't still be going in 20 years time like the Troopy is ;-) )

Wayne

I am torn.....having offloaded my Patrol but am still waiting for the Troopy.

I reckon, going from your last Troopy to this one.

I think the other part of Wayne's analogy is that David is moving all his stuff from the Patrol to the Troopy while both are being driven at 100 ks and the Patrol is coughing and spluttering a bit as its overloaded and the Troopy hasn't been tested under load yet.

Also the family is all yelling at him on the UHF to hurry up as they want to get on with the trip.

Good luck David!

Michael,

It will be worth the wait for the Troopie.

When you get it we will have to take it on the Hay River just to test it out.

It's just another excuse for David & Co. not to get out and travel more..... ;-)

He really should get Damian to do all these menial tasks and just leave the office environment for a tour of our fabulous country.

Now that is a great idea. Pity it is so bloody complicated. ExplorOz spans multiple machines some run the application, other run the databases and then they all have to talk to each other and keep track of everything. It is really a very difficult thing sometimes and this migration is the biggest update for over three years. I hope it makes a difference........

A Server is a PC that normally doesn't have a Dsiplay or Keyboard connected to it for a person to use - it's there for many users to access.

It holds all the information for the Exploroz website and we all access the information on it via the Internet.

Mike,

That explains it well, but I still like the way John and I explained it.
