Hello all, was just checking some thing in my log books and come across warning for my vehicle !!! ""Steering wheel airbags to be checked when vehicle is 10 years old or more"". How the hell where, who by, do you get this done and could it be an insurance issue if its not checked ???? Regards Steve M

Always wondered about it too.
Not sure how you
check them.
But the local panel beater is required to change them after an accident, so maybe ask them?
At least we all still have
seat belts. Replaced a
seat belt the other day when it got frayed.

Just don't do it yourself !!
My 4wd club safety committee arranged a demo of what happens when they go off recently. Blood..y hell, when the dust had cleared and we got our hearing back again we were told some of the statistics of injuries caused by airbags - not nice.

Hi there Kiwi Kia, no intensions of touching it. I have also seen one go off and your dead right in your description, would take your arm off if you tryed to deploy it yourself. My mate did one when I worked at the smash repairers showing me how much force they have. Makes me wonder with some people that have airbags and they sit so close to the wheel ?? I think would do more damage then the smash itself in some cases. Regards Steve M

Yeah Stephen, I recently saw a video showing heaps of people crowded around a crashed vehicle trying to extracate a trapped front
seat passenger. Suddenly the airbag went off and physically threw two or three people a couple of metres away from the vehicle. I guess fire and rescue crews have to be very cautious these days.

Even more severe is when you see soemone trying to rescue a pilot from a fighter and the ejection
seat goes off.. similar effect only 10 times worse... not pretty.

There was a discussion a while back about this, some manufacturers when pressed then stated that the service life could be extended by another 5 yeasr to a total of 15. There is no "test' so they have to be replaced, very expensive and can be the sole reason for older vehicles being written off after a relatively minor accident.
It is apparently illegal to remove them as
well.
Vehicles with belt pretensioners and the gas powered
seat slides also come under the same problems.

HI Peter yes my'n has the pretensioners as
well some thing to do with the airbags. Might give Toyota a ring and see what they say about it. Another 5 years would be good wont own it by then anyway. Regards Steve M
