i remember one campground where i had to drive past all the permanents down to the back of the park. Finding a place to put the pegs in and at the same time avoiding all the dog turds proved too much of a challenge, I lumped the unmade tent into the car and found a great site with a camp kitchen and lots of shade

the last two on mr1927's list ring bells but unfortunately i can't remember which was which

Since you need to be close to Walkerston, i would suggest Kinchant Waters (leisure resort) at Kinchant Dam, just up the road. Ph (07) 4954 1453 ... It is the not a resort per se, more like the camping and bush hotel at the dam. With the water levels at or near 100%, it is nice to relax at and have a cold one.

It is not too far into Mackay from here.....
