Does anybody know how one would go about buying a 4.2 diesel Auto GU Patrol in New Zealand and importing it into Australia, since Mr Nissan didn't do it for us.

Don't bother - it is not worth it. We bought a Landrover over 5 years ago and the total cost was around $13,000 once everything was added up. If you buy a cheaper vehicle, you will end up with less tax than we did and you can opt for no insurance which will drop the bill by probably $3000.
We did own the vehicle for 2 years before we bought it from NZ, it is probably harder if you do not already own it.
Also most GU's in NZ are Jap Imports ie second hand vehicles from Japan and are less likely to meet the ADR's than new NZ vehicles.
Do your sums carefully and it will cost - do you really want one that desperately. Blame the OZ motor industry being protected by govt for the totally unrealistic import restrictions of second hand vehicles into OZ.
Would we import a vehicle again - NEVER, it is just not worth it

HI Rossco,
AS far as I know the rules have been tightened up about importing second hand vehicles into Australia about 18 months ago after pressure from the motor industry. The only vehicles that can be imported now must be listed on the Commonwealth Govt "Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles" OR be older than 15 years at time of importation. That is why you see a lot of the late 60 series LC from Japan over the past few years (had to be older than 15 years to come in). Some of the early 80 series are now coming in. So basically the only Patrol you can import from New Zealand would be 1992 model or older. Of course it must comply with ADR rules before it can be registered. You need to get Commonwealth Govt approval before its imported else if it doesn't comply you will have to re-export it at your expense or have it destroyed in customs. (i.e. comply with age limit or on register). ADR compliance can be done here.
I looked into it as wll but decided it was not worth it anymore.
There may be exemptions to the above rules if you owned the vehicle for a period of time in NZ and were moving to Australia for example to live. I am not sure about that side of it.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,Glen
