Just looking at new tyres for my hilux and was wanting some confirmation whether 225/75/16 will fit on my split rims. Are they smaller in diameter then the 205's?

Probably Road Grippers, standard on 2004 and earlier Hilux with split rims (205/70 by 16s)

Troy,

No. The overall diameter is 2" more i.e. 27.29" compared to 29.28"

205R16 are actually a 80series profile.

So 205R16 are 735mm diameter and 225/75R16 are 744mm diameter, so they ae an ideal replacement tyre. Just check the load index is OK - I remember most of the 225 to be 110 to 115, which I'd expect to be greater than what is required for the Hilux

They will be slightly larger in diameter. A 225 75 16 works out mathmatically at 743 mm. My Hilux was originally fitted with 205R16C 694 Bridgestone all terrains. According to the Bridgestone site they are 732 mm in diameter. That is not much of a difference however a 225/75 will raise the gearing slightly and affect the speedo but it may not be all that noticeable.

I still have those old Bridgestones and they are about 3/4s worn but I also have a second set of split rims fitted with 205R16 LT Wrangler TDs. They only come in four sizes, a 205, two 7.50 16s in different load ratings and a 14 inch which I assume fits 2 wd utes. They would be intended as a stock size for my rims. I am not sure what their diameter is but I would imagine it is similar to the 694s.

If your rims are 5.5 inches then a 225 is about 85 mm wider. I am not sure what the limit is but that would have to be getting close. I would check with the tyre manufacturer, not the local tyre service, before fitting them.
