Just starting to fit out my GQ for a trip to Cape York. Now I love the GQ's off road performance, but when it comes to storage, this thing sucks! So all you GQ owners out there - where do you store all your gear? Love to see some photos!

You will find some spent their hard earned on overpriced commercial storage systems and the rest of us built our own, check my rig pics for the Pezza version, it's in a GU but GQ are no different.
If you are interested in building your own use the search function and you will find lots of info there.

Cheers

Sorry Keith and Ti troll the write-up in the rig pic describes the drawers in the GQ shorty I have (have put a pic in there of them now too).
The ones in the back of the GU I built myself for a grand total of about $500 plus $350 (it says 550 but that was including a stuff-up) for the custom 55ltr stainless tank. Have a look Here for the full write-up.
2 side by side drawers would probably come in at around $350.
I just found out that Yahoo photo's is closed which is where I had the pics of the construction process, so if either of you, or anyone else, wish to see them give me ur email at pezzamail at sctelco dot net dot au (obviously no spaces and dot=. and at=@ ) and I will send them to you, till I get time to put them up on yahoo's new page.

Cheers
Pezza

I built a simple unit for the back of my 4runner. You reckon you got storage issues! Anyway, I just made a 20x20x1.6 RHS frame with legs on the body side, and clad the top and side with some 12mm ply covered with marine carpet. I left a section of floor on the left for the fridge. Next I will make a side wall almost to the roof & next to fridge, with a shelf for two long plastic tubs, a shelf for "stuff" and a bulkhead shelf for light stuff like pillows, etc. I reckon I can double my effective storage area now.

What I did was take all measurements & do some sketches, make some cardboard templates and build it up gradually. IMHO, and as the previous reply, those storage systems, as for pretty much all 4x4 stuff, is way overpriced. Course if you don't have the capacity to do it yourself there aren't many options. Alt, go to ARB & the like and check theirs out. Then make a similar unit.

I too will place some photo's in the rig pics in a couple of weeks.....

I built mine, but it is probably not as economical as you think.

The 3 sets of runners were around $250, a couple of hundred for the ply, 50 bucks worth of steel, 150 worth of carpet, so it cost me about $650.00.

Chuck a couple of days of building onto that, pay yourself a wage and you are better off with a bought system. On the other hand, It was enjoyable to build, it fits the vehicle, fridge, storage containers etc perfectly, and I can remove it in about 5 min to put the 3rd row of seats back in so I am happy with the unit.

I'll mm you when I do the pics in a couple of weeks...

PS I did build some bodgey ones for around $200 previously, non steel, drawers were ply on ply (no runners, no carpet), and there was no fridge slide. It worked well for me, but the wife couldn't open the drawers very easily, and couldn't get stuff from the fridge very easily (vertically disadvantaged). They served a purpose and survived a trip to Kalumburu, and most of the ply was recycled into the flash new ones.

Well , if he won't spend the money he can't see my drawers (where have I heard that before??)...

Just jokes, just jokes, I'm at work and not having fun....The death star cafeteria incident lego email got me through yesterday, (those who have seen it will understand) I need something else today!...
.I'll try to take photo's soon and post another followup when I have them.

Ti Trol

I built my own storage system and fridge slide for my GQ.

When I upgraded to a GU did the same.

My is built out of 20 x 20 steel frame, Marine Ply and covered with carpet to hide my lousy welding. You can buy rollers for the drawers and also heavy duty rollers for the fridge slide. All up it was cost you about $200-300 versus the $2,000 - $3,000 to get a bought one.

I bolted it to the floor in the back using the existing bolt holes for the tie downs.

I used Capral aluminium tubing and corner fittings. Reinforced the corners with some flat aluminium gussets (with aluminium rivets). Squared it all up with some 6ply along the sides and 12ply top. Some paint and a bit of carpet and it has come up a treat

will post pics in Member's Rig in next few days
