Can any one tell me which is the best motor to constantly carry a 1000k loan in the form of a slide on camper. I will buy one or the other tomorrow or the next day. I have a 2005 Navara 3 litre so I now how that performs in a slight head wind. Back to 4th gear
on a flat road. Will the 4.2 be a better option (2007) model or the new common rail 3 ltr.
Would appreciate help. I know this has been talked about many times. Can someone point me to the right thread to save you time.
Many thanks Colin

Thanks Blue. Have you got one and how does it pull in a head wind? Do you drop back to 4th when carrying 1000 Klgs. Pulling in a head wind is not a lot of fun.

Well the 3 ltr went boom.

The 4.2 is a reliable beast I can take into remote places.

Cheers

yes he did answer his own question since ther are no more 4.2's.... And none in dealers. What there was has gone.

"Will the 4.2 be a better option (2007) model"

But you would go used 4.2 before buying a grenade.

Leroy,
You have obviously done this. If you have the time can you tell me more or have you written on the forum before about the changes.

I personally haven't done it as I have a 3lt. I drove my mates before he did the exhaust and tune and I thought what a pig of a vehicle. He almost traded it in on a 3lt and decided to do the exhaust and tune at Diesel tek in Lilydale. What a huge difference. Chalk and cheese. The extra torque and pwr and not to mention just the drivability. I didn't want to give the vehicle back after a day driving it in the vic hc!! If you seach the forum you will see that many have made similar coments.

I know they are a great 4WD but my wife and I have seen the results of an accident without air bags. Until Toyota remedy that,
it is not on option. A V8 Nissan diesel is only a dream.

More torque less gear changes. Less torque more gear changes. I had a ZD 30 Patrol it was a more work driving it to keep it on boost so I didn't loose steam on the hills. I've a 4.2 TD Criuser now.

1000kg is a lot of camper.
The chassis will be the issue. Most people I know reinforce the rear spring towers on the Patrol coil spring traytops. I'd choose a leaf spring rear end, if you still have that option. Do they still make the 4.2?? I thought you could only get the 3.0 in the traytops now.

I appreciate what you say about airbags - rules the 79series out for you.

Dear Phil,
Thanks, for your reply. I am just adding up the payload. The camper weight is approx 600 kgs. With my fat old body and one other passenger, an aluminium front bar, gear on board for camping, fuel and perhaps a tow ball down force of 100kg max ( not all the time) you could be right. I may have to go a aluminium tray, 2400mm. I wander what the ride on the leaf spring version is like without the load. Any ideas.
Thanks once again.
I will have to look into it.
Colin
PS. I know where I can get a 4.2 ltr Coil spring version near new.

Buy it.. rare as rocking horse, and they are increasing in value.

Get a bit of turbo work done to them, not much just pump timing and fuel and you will never look back.

Put airbags inside your coils and it will carry a ton all day long with a comfy ride to boot!

and put more stress on the spring towers becasue they have to take/absorb the impact instead of the spring.

"Put airbags inside your coils and it will carry a ton all day long with a comfy ride to boot!" what crap.

Take note of what Leroy says or the springs will fall out. Reinforce the top of the spring towers or they push out of the chassis or tear the towers themselves.

Colin,
I haven't drive in a rear leaf patrol. But I expect that with a camper on the back, it wouldn't be any different.

My Toyota has coil front/leaf rear, and rides better than the all coil Prado I had, but it has a longer wheelbase and the leaf springs are very long.

I know a couple of people who've had their rear towers strengthened as soon as they bought their vehicles, and they have peace of mind, and no hassles with the vehicles.

Yep, not bad if you're happy with IFS. Chopping the 200series TTD would be rather nice!

Some details of this vehicle (TD 100series)here on LCOOL.

Another one (V8 100series 5th wheeler) here is well.

I bought one of the last 4.2s in wa,2006 model, no more 4.2s after this, have 3inch exhaust fitted, turbo mod done, gives me 150hp and 400 odd nm of torque, go like the proverbial shower, need to get a good suspension done on it now to keep every thing neat and tidy on road and off.

Hi guys,
Well thanks for your suggestions. But guess what, I missed out on a 4.2 litre and ended up buying a new 3 litre common rail cab chassis. Got a great deal from the people in Warrnambool Victoria.
Found a good tray maker in Hamilton. Mc Ervale steel Construction, and I live in Hahndorf South Australia but that is another thread.
Thanks for your assistance. I have arranged the air bags and a lot of other goodies.
Colin.
