I have a Pathfinder 2002 auto petrol and hear you can't attach a snorkal.
What depth of water can get through and are there any tips that one can use when getting through deep water

Not sure where the airintake lives on the Pathfinders but locate that and go say 30cm if not more under that and that will be your max

Have a look here :

They were supposed to have a snorkel for the earlier Pathys ready for sale about March last year. Give them a try.

Not sure about your shape, but the earlier 3lt V6 I took to Cape York had no probs with 1 mt deep crossings on a number of occassions. I just tarped up the front, let everything cool down and then went in as per any other "over axle" deep crossing, smooth and steady with a bow wave. I still have a pic of the pathy doing Nolan's Brook on the cape in my rig pics. I did not tarp up for the Wenlock crossing just to the north of Weipa and nearly lost her in this one. I figured the "shallow" side of the crossing was fine but when the trailer decided to shift towards the falls, I drove her down into the "deep" section to avoid the falls. Water over the windscreen wipers, right boot flat to the boards and as soon as the rig come out the water, I killed the engine and lifted the bonnet to find a smidge of water in the air intake.......phew, as close as I would like to get up there. Pascoe's was another one were the water come over the bonnet but with the tarp, it proved to be no probs, like the others where I tarped up.

Air intake was in passenger's side guard, pretty well out of harms way, so long as you kept moving.

Cheers, Trevor.

I have seen R50's ford water about 60cm deep with no real issues other than leakage through the rear door seals.

I have also seen the result of one hitting water around 30cm deep too fast. He ended up getting a new engine as rods were bent.

Here is another that looks a little neater. More modification under the skin is needed though.
