Anyone know if you can hunt(no dogs) in state forest in Tasmania or is it all done on private property with permission.I would imagine there would be good deer hunting there and wondering if I should take a rifle on my planned holiday in March.

Rambler

I've never shot Deer and don't intend to do so. Most of the shooting we did back in the 80's was up in the high country south of Cressy.

At that time, shooting was usually done to supply food for a fishing camp. Generally Wallaby.

I can't answer your question, other than to say things have probably changed.

In March I don't think you'll come accross a great deal of activity, unless you have a local to guide you. Spring is the most productive period.

Regards

Kim

Nick,

Good for a laugh though. I hope you're right about foxes in Tassie. I'd hate to think someone would be stupid enough to bring them across from the north island.

You need to apply for a forestry permit to hunt on(dont think they have changed it again), you also need a deer licence. The stag season is in for the month of march only(believe you can also shoot a doe on the same licence), walaby season is closed for the month of march only. Its getting harder and harder to go anywhere to shoot a stag unless your prepared to pay big dollars. Its a over regulated joke deer shooting here. The powers to be would rather poison deer than let people shoot them for meat,Go figure.

The permits are through lands dept or what ever they are called now (keep changing their name) not forestry, they are free and it allows you to shoot on “unused / unoccupied crown land” Here is the catch there isn’t much left and there are no maps with the real detail unless you want to spend a small fortune.

You have to stipulate what you want to shoot, and as Nick said gain the appropriate permit in addition to the letter. The permits if I remember when I filled out mine support Tas licenses only…don’t quote me on this, and they take a couple of weeks / month to get

There is a couple of private places you can shoot on, one is on the way up to the east coast out near Buckland not sure exactly where.

Cheers

Nick and Dan,
Thanks a lot for your replys and it looks as though with my limited time in Tassie it would not be a viable proposition
. Iwill leave my hunting for my trips up north. In Tassie I will do my hunting with a camera.
