Cape York weather in Sept/Oct

Hi,
we are looking at taking a 6 week trip to the Cape through September and the first 2 weeks of October 2008.
I just wanted to know if the rains ever start coming this early and what the risk might be of getting stuck. Is it worth bringing it foward a couple of weeks to be safe?
Thanks for any advise!!!
Jude

This is an extract from a site I found, I was told in 2002 to be out of there by September.

Seasons
For practical purposes, there are two seasons: the Wet or monsoon from December to April or May (preceded by heat and thunderstorms in October-November), and the Dry for the rest of the year. The Indigenous people describe six seasons, recognised according to the times when certain flowers or birds appear, or when particular foods are available. Rivers are seasonal, most having little or no flow by the end of the Dry. But the Wet brings flooding, and road access is effectively cut off most of the time. However locals say it is the best time of the year. The landscape is green and fresh, many migratory birds arrive, and it is not unpleasantly hot.
Temperatures in the Dry (cool season) range from 25-28degC max. to 10degC min., Oct-Nov 30-40degC max., mid-Wet season 26-30degC max.

Jude,

The weather infomation in the Trek Note shows the averages over all years of BOM recording in the area so it should give you a good idea however as we have all seen in the last few years the weather can be a strange thing. Anyway use the link in the header of this post (I linked this post the Cape York trek notes).

Have a good one.

It will be hot and humid. The majority of travellers will have been and gone. The tracks will be corregated.
It may be wet or dry :) If wet, forget it !

The probability of early summer storms will start in October, but the risk would be low in first two weeks.
See also http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/qld/weipa/climate.shtml
and

From the above links you can see that Jun to Sep are the very low rainfall months, and there is a jump up in Oct, but you'd have to be unlucky to get stuck esp in first two weeks.

Just as a quick followup - the trek note weather system (and all ExplorOz Weather) uses exaclty the same source data as the bom pages you are refering to. Not a dig just feedback to advise people of the source of our data to avoid confusion.

In 2006 there was a late end to the wet season (July) and good rain even early September (but not from an early "wet", which doesn't arrive til December usually). Who knows what 2008 will be like, but it will be getting hot, and we found it very windy anywhere near the east coast - unpleasant to be near a beach, in Sept that year.

Hi Jude
We did the Cape last year, left Cairns 13 Sept and arrived back on 29 Oct and found the weather fine although a bit hot in the last two weeks. Had a ball (five families) and did the Cape pretty thouroughly. Enjoyed camping at Somerset the best and found it well protected from the winds. Thinking of doing it again in 2009 but will go May June next time.

Cheers Rod

Less people later in the season also so something else to consider.

We used to do a cape trip every year that was 10 year ago in September and it was always hot and dusty and not a lot of water in the creeks.
But the way the wet season is lasting longer over the last few years September could end up the best time.

All the best
