If you are talking about the 3litre diesel, I think they are all time bombs, some just tick longer than others. The difference is in the later engine, they shortened the dipstick so when you filled to the full mark, you actually had more oil in it. I dont think they did anything else.. i could be wrong. also the console/centre dash is a bit wider! why i have no idea. The up/down switch for the aerial has moved and now has a 12 outlet at the front. Lighter interior

I'm certainly not a 3 litre officianado (hate the bloody things actually)......but I reckon there are other notable and discernable differences in the engine compartment between the II and III models.
I recall reading somewhere previously, in response to a question as to how you could tell whether a II had been re-built to the same specs as a III. The answer was something to do with looking down on the passenger's side of the engine, near the turbo.....there is apparently a different component added to the III that isn't there on a stock II. Sorry i can't be more specific, but I do believe Nissan did certain things to the III to make it more reliable (ie: less likely to go BANG!!!!), but I am also aware that there have been a few reported incidents of IIIs blowing up too.

I think my newie is a GU III, 4.2. yo get the intercooler, they made both the oilfilters the same for convenience, I still don't know how I'm going to get to them....there is 2 ciggie lighter points and in mine you get a good rear aircon.......
I know very little about the 3.0, but after my woes with a 2.8 I spat teh dummy and got a 4.2 and it feels soooo gooood!
Cheers Andrew
PS I have a GU I for sale which would be a great car with a chevy diesel or a gen III V8 in it LOL

tracks - if you go to www.redbook.com.au you can do a comparison of the two
vehiclesside by side on one page - all specifications are listed - also can obtain pictures of each model.
