Well got back yesterday after 5 days on the Island. Went over at
inskip point and got around
hook point with no worries. There is a lot of sand gone from
the beach with about 2mt cliffs all the way up
the beach to
Indian head but
the beach itself was very good to drive on. The inland tracks would have to be the best I have ever seen them , no centre mounds and very smooth. I think the rain we have had lately had a lot to do with that. We done all the usual trips Lake Mc kenzie ,
Eli creek ,
Central station , champaign pools ,happy valley ,lake wabbi ,
eurong and kingfisher resort where we stayed. The only nasty bit was at
indian head where I took great pleasure in snatching out a landcruiser ute with a camper trailer hahahaha. As you went through the cutting at
indian head and just before the boarded section up the
hill there was about four foot deep of water to go through and about thirty foot wide which was strange as I have never seen water lay there before ,was still fun though.....
All up had a great time and yes the weather did hold for us.
regards

Hi
Ross,
Sounds like you had a good trip. Snatching out a fellow camper always makes for good stories :-) Realy looking forward to our first trip to Fraser, should be early may as part of our 6 month trek through the middle of oz (east/west & back).
I will have to post some questions sooner to the Frazer trek.
Cheers
Jason

You will love Fraser and looking at some of your trip pics I don't think you will have any problems. Tracks there change almost daily if you have rain they are firm and smooth but after a bit of sun for a few days they get soft and chewed up depending on traffic.

Sorry the water section was not 4 foot deep all the way across just in the middle where the tour buses and everone else had dug it out for about 8 foot. We sat there and watched all the cowboys going from side to side doing photo runs. So it was a case of look before you leap.

Hi Daza
Axel is right but in saying that the beaches on fraser had copped a flogging for two weeks and even though a lot of sand had gone they were still good to drive on. Teewah beach will have a bit of
rock exposed and no doubt will have a few good climbs up into the camping spots from
the beach. I give up trying to predict the weather every time I book or organise a holiday you can bet your B@LLS there will be rain, big low pressure system or something unusual happening. I still think you will have a great weekend...:)

Ross

Hi Axel &
Ross
I will call into the Rangers office, before we get on the ferry, if its
to much of a hassle with the van, getting on to the camping areas
off
the beach, we will stay at North Shore
Camp Grounds near the.
pub.and drive up
the beach later.

Sounds great,
we have really enjoyed our trips to Fraser.
Last I heard they were going to stop beach traffic on the bottom end of the island? Obviously they have either dropped that change or it is yet to come into effect?
Cheers PJ.

Hi PJ
Hook point is to remain open for the time being, they have what they call shared zones IE: birds and cars, or people and cars/planes were the speed limit is 40kph and parts of
hook point is one. Coming up to
Eli creek the speed zone goes down to 10kph. The inland road (
hook point bypass) was quite good but only 50kph speed limit.

Ross

If anyone is going to Fraser next week, keep a look out for about 15 new Jeep Cherokee KK's. Spent the last couple of days getting them ready for the press launch on Fraser Island next week.

It would have to be about 6-7 years ago I did my last trip to Fraser. Have lately been considering it again. Reason for not returning was the constant dramas with tour operators/buses. There were 3 vehicles that trip and were surprised at how bad the bus drivers had gotten. In one instance we saw a bus force a vehicle into the surf. Didn't see one bus/tour group use an indicator, not once in a week on the island.
Thought I'd have a chat to one of the drivers at Eli, his opinion was they had a job to do and they had been given authority to do what they wanted. When asked by whom I was told "the boss", whoever that was. We stayed with long term locals and they told us it had been getting worse each year. Sadly he passed on and we haven't bothered going back.
Has the attitude changed? If so might
check it out again.
