Hi Guys,
I am looking around for a good handheld UHF and have been advised that the icom IC-R5 is the one to get.
Can anyone suggest a better option or whether i would be better to go with GME?
Regards
Brett

Don't know that one Brett are you sure thats model number.
IC-41S is main selling 5 watt Icom
Icom make good reliable products , but there are others.
I will be reviewing a new one an Omni 5 watt unit as advertized in 4wd mags at $200 soon.
If you want a portable solution for walking/bike riding then new 2watt uniden 44sx comes with lot including a speaker mic for $145

Hi Brett,
I use my Icom IC-40S handheld in the car sitting on the console and plugged straight into the 12 volt socket. It is connected to an external ariel on the bull bar and i transmit through an Icom HM-46 speaker microphone. If i need the unit outside the car just unplug and fit its own ariel. Its range through the external ariel is as good as my mates inbuilt units as it is a 5w radio.
Cheers Mark

I spent a fair bit of time researching my 5 watt handheld choice about 2 years ago - narrowed to the Icom IC41S and the GME 6200 (the only others [Uniden ?] had smaller cases and probably smaller batteries - not interested). I bought the GME - its been very good overall - on reading the current specs for the Icom, I doubt if there is anything it it anymore. Price might be the guide ! The GME can be had for $399 with a fast charger and cradle, on show specials. Don't know about the Icom. I use CTCSS on the GME - not sure if that is on the Icom. The Icom's repeater scanner is worth having in my view. I use that on my in-car Icom 400.

Hi Brett,
Don't get Uniden, they can't supply spare parts for my 3yr old 5watt unit. $400.00 worth of junk at the moment but it was great while it was working!

Isn't there some requirement on manufacturers of domestic equipment that they are required to supply spares for 7 years or something? I might be talking rubbish here - "not for the first time" some would say :)
I'd be interested to know what spare they cannot supply as about 95% of the electronic components would be generic, it's only things such as the plastic mouldings and, maybe coils, which would be Uniden specific. If they will not support a 3 year old product then this needs to be made very clear to the UHF CB buying public. Would you please provide further details?

My understanding after 20 odd years in the appliance game is that spare parts should be available for ten years after an appliance has been discontinued. I don't know if that applies to amall electronic type devices but IMO it should.
If I were you Douglas M I'd be calling OCBA for advice, 3 years out of a $4000 radio isn't good enough.

Mike and Pat,
It is a uh075 5 watt hand held uhf.
The charging cradle contains the charging circuitry and the IC has overheated and disconnected itself from the circuit board. I have been told twice by Uniden that there is a 90 day wait for the part and they will not take an order for it. I will build or buy a 7.4 volt charger and connect it to the contacts in the cradle.
Also Uniden have said to me that there is no adaptor to charge the unit from a vehicle {which is probably why
mine failed} Great news for anyone who has or intends to buy a Uniden hand held!

I bought it from nsi communications.see
http://nsiradio1.stores.yahoo.net/
The special is on the first page.
I would get on to it straight away as they don't have too many left.
