Hi
Yes me again!
We are about to travel for a year and was thinking it may be worth carrying a sand flag just in case. Not really in to desert travel but could end up in some beach dunes where we need one.
What is a good brand and where would i get it?
How do most people mount it? Would like it to brake down in to several bits for easy storage.
Thanks Lyndon

We use an old telescopic fishing rod with the eyes removed and a flag attached to the top, its great for traveling when space is an issue.

I bought an old surf rod from Cash Converters for $20, and added an
orange flag. It flexes nicely - better than the other flags I've used before. just tape it to the bullbar.

I use my surfcaster cable tied to the bull bar and a bit of duct tape around the join in the rod just in case it vibrates loose.

Yep, ducttape around the join is a good move.

If it was me, I wouldn't be using my good rod as a sand flag.
Would be a right proper bugger if you broke it on an overhead branch or similar BEFORE you got there. You may miss out on catching anything.
Much better to buy an old rod and set that up as the sand flag, duct/gaffer tape around the joins is a good idea too.
Disco.

Opposite Lock sell sand flags. I bought one and it worked
well. It is a one piece, but last time I was in there they had ones that were two pieces and screwed together.

I've got one of these 3.4 meter whips with the light as shown on this site. Great unit (didn't bother to connect the light up). Pretty hard to come by down south tho. Used pretty much exclusively by the mining companys. Pretty pricey too. Got
mine in Hedland.
Cheers. Mick

Hello,
I am in need of a sand flag also for Simpson trip this year. I was thinking of attaching a flag to the top of the HF tapped whip on the front of the vehicle. Not sure if this would be high enough however.

I bought one at the mobility
shop for $15.00. (Most large centers will have one)
Used zip ties to hold it on the roof rack and it now sits behind the back seats for whenever I need it.
I used it for 10 days on the
Birdsville trip and only took it off when I got back to
Brisbane. It is a fibreglass one piece whip and a polypropylene flag.
Regards
Derek.

Looks good Derek but if it ain't at the front and 15 ft of the ground it probably won't work due to the angles involved at least on steep hills. T
The problem with a lot of the fishing rod, or electrical conduit ones is that they are fine when stationary but have a habit of breaking with low branches.
The other one to watch is how flexible they are. It is amazing how many people use tent pole and think it looks good. problem is when they get moving a bit the air resistance on the flag just about bend it back to touch the roof making next to useless.
For $100 or so dollars get a proper one. Try www.outbackideas@three.com.au

I looked around for a while , uses a squit pole and a friend of
mine had the squid pole from the
birdsville caravan park to about half way to big red before it snapped so i decided to buy a 3 piece fibregalss one from Outback Ideas , cost me 100.00 did the simpson without anyproblems and since i put the holder on the roofrack , i only used 2 pieces. Very good quality , all riveted.
Can recommend it.

If you keep an eye open at Aussie disposals they sometimes have sections of tank whip areial available.Make it as long as you like and attack bottom section securely to bullbar Easy to dismantle and store.
Cheers,
Mary
