g'day

i have to replace the windscreen on my gu wagon. its cracked on the drivers side and wont pass rego.

genuine nissan is about $800. o'briens quoted $ 387, but there is another co "windscreen discounters" who quote $287, incl warranty. i am inclined to go for o'briens, but there is quite a price diff.

anyone have any experience with obriens and or windscreen discounters or other people ?

cheers/lambo

I used a "discount" windscreen on the Paj a couple of years ago. Still got it. no problems. Half the cost of the O'Briens version.
Only comment is it seems to reflect more than the original. You can see the extra reflection on road signs. Doesn't affect me as a driver but might be giving others a hard time occasionally.

John, My GU also has a crack half a metre long across tha drivers side, i was about to do the ring around (Sydney), does your windscreen have the tinted band on the top? The original GU does not as you know. Michael

Hi,
Try Albert at Campsie Automotive Glass 9789-4329. He has been in business there for more than 30 years so he must be doing something right. Recently had the front windscreen of my LC100 done. Comes with full warranty and can't tell the difference from EOM. No affiliation just a happy customer.
Regards

If you know someone in a car yard, call in a small favour - I recently was quoted $260 for a Mazda screen, pressed the guy pretty hard, but he wouldn't budge.

Called in a favour and got the screen fitted on site for $130. Every car yard has a glass supplier, another screen at trade price is good for both the car yard (keeps their volume up) and the supplier, and it's good for you too!

As for quality, glass is glass in my opinion.

We use to use Windscreen discounters when I worked for Toyota never had any issues, Windscreen obriens, well I wont go there but they will never get my $$$ again. Not sure how the patrol screens are held in, sickaflex (spelling) or by a full rubber ?? If sickaflex (black gooy stuff) make sure when they cut the old one out with the strip of wire they use (well use to few years back) that they dont drag it along the paint around the edge of framework of where screen sits as it will take the paint off, and if not touched back up again will rust out in no time at all. Some fitters take a lot of care others dont give a sh it. Regards Steve M

Had a new screen done in my Troopie last year and the mobile guy reckoned all screens now come from a manufacturing plant in China! dont know if its true but maybe explains why I need another one now due to another chip and crack!
I have the one a year replacement on my insurance.

Wouldnt surprise me. I will find that out tomorrow if i can as I need a new one for the prado, about 40cm across in front of me, plus the screen badly pitted. I payed the extra $50 for window coverage but have a feeling its done by a mob I dont like so am going to findout. Other wise I will pay for it myself.

Hi lambo,

Just a tip - I had a screen replaced in my GU about 6 months ago, and they reused the trim around the top and sides of the screen. At the time it looked fine, but now 6 months later it's gone all wavy. So ask about that - especially if you're getting it done under insurance? I'd paid the extra $50 to NRMA to get the extra insurance - and was very glad to come out ahead of the insurance co for once!

Windscreen discounters is owned by O'briens, same installers used by both companies. No replacement windscreens are made in Australia all are imported from China.
I am also getting one replaced and this is what I have found out is far, best of luck.

Pete.
