80 series horizontal tailgate gap

Hi all, my 80 series rear tailgate is bent enough for the gap between the rubber seal and the tailgate to be about 1/4 inch. If you have the tailgate closed and look into the rear you can see straight through. Also water and dust on the outside can see straight in!! I assume this is from me and the previous owner climbing in and out, kneeling on the centre of the tailgate.

Has anyone tried this method from the 80scool tech page to bend the tailgate back up. I am going to try it in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone else had had any success with it:

80 tailgate fix

Has anyone got better ideas?

Cheers,
Wazza

You could try the mobs that convert them into tray backs(they chop the backs off complete) and they may have a nearly new one in you colour.
Worth a try.

Yeah, but you can't eat off a barn door or rest your beer on it....

Tony, I think you have struck the cause of my problem. Too much beer has caused me to be heavy enough to bend my rear tailgate...Cheers,

Unless you stop climbing on it it will reoccur. Get some one-sided sticky felt strip and put it on the mating surface of the tailgate. (or something similar)
If you want to try the 80scool way, you will need to plate the outside with strip to stop it bending. Email me and i will send you an itomised email i have kept

Hi Wazza
Had a look to no avail. never mind i will try to recall.
1. remove tailgate carpet and panels under it.
2. place wood inside tailgate with hole drilled in the middle
3. attatch slide hammer through holes and sitting on gate, hammer up and along the length to pull out bend.
4. cut and bend 1mm sheet steel to cover lower edge of gate as wide as the carpet is, sitting from lower edge of carpet down and around bottom of gate, finishing before hinges.
"Non acidic" silastic it to bottom gate, pop riviting ends and middle.
5. reinstall carpet-fix is hardly noticeable and strengtherns gate lower section.
Hope this helps
